Tax, Title & Registation Question

We are in the process of buying a Forest River Salem Villa. We live in Florida and buying from a dealer in Pennsylvania. We plan on leaving the trailer in an RV campground in Vermont (we will stay there 2-3 months in summer and the rest of the time the campground stores it)

My question is what state do I register it?? I called the DMV in Florida and they said if its in Vermont register it there, but we will have Florida insurance.

I don't know and am hoping someone here has had a similar experience.

You will need to check with the states involved. I have heard so many things including if there is a loan it will have to registered in our home state.

State where your driver's license is from.
I doubt your insurance company will insure it, if it is not.

Telling the insurance company that it is stored in Vermont could affect your rates.

True. But if a claim is made against it and the insurance company investigates the living in Florida/storage in Vermont situation,things could get a bit dicey.

They always ask where will it be stored? the answers is in Vermont and show them your lease. alot of people own or rent out of state property. If you have a lease on the space it's your property, same as renting a vacation home under lease such as on the coast. But I would register in Florida and not at a rental state. besides Florida doesn't have personal property tax and Vermont I think they do. So if you register it in Vermont you will be billed the tax....

If you register in Florida you will have to pay sales tax based on the selling price, which is different in each county. My county is 6.5%.

Short answer is Vermont. Sorry to be a downer, long answer follows.

Living in the Northeast and working in government here, I can tell you that your registration has to be in the city and state where the vehicle is garaged. I saw a reply saying to use Florida. Sure you can register it in Florida and not pay taxes on it but that is illegal. In my state they have started to aggressively go after people that do this. When you are caught, they can go after 3-6 years of taxes plus interest, penalties, and administrative fees. They also will put a lien on the RV on top of it all. When all is said and done they will be pretty close to owning your RV.

Municipalities are hiring outside firms to track this stuff down now and use all kinds of records including DMV and insurance data. Vermont is leading this charge in the Northeast.

An insurance company is well aware of "vacation" homes. It may actually cost you less. You just have to ask yourself if it is worth the risks.

X2. Don't tell the gov't anything. Have PA issue you transporter plates, move it to VT, insure it with your insurance co. and enjoy it.

So, you are saying that if I am a resident of PA and own a travel trailer that I normally keep at my seasonal site in NJ, but travel with it elsewhere during the off season and at times during the summer; I need to title, register, and tag it in NJ and title, register, and tag my tow vehicle in PA (who issues my driver's license)?

That does not sound right. What address goes on the trailer's title?

You will need to insure the trailer with a Vermont policy if it is there more often than not. Might as well be upfront about it from the beginning in case you ever have a claim, especially if it's when it is being stored there.

Some state also require yearly inspection of a TT. In PA you need a yearly safety inspection on a TT. If this is a park model and going to be set up in a park then there may be other issues that need to be considered. I'd call the campground and the different DMVs and state the scenario and see what each state DMV would say.

I live in PA. Bought my TT in Ohio. When I bought it in Ohio the dealer did the paperwork. It was titled in Ohio and i was given a 90 day temp plate. When I got back to PA once I received Ohio title in mail I took it to PA dmv transferred title and registered and paid sales tax in PA.

I signed paper in Ohio that stated I was paying sales tax in PA, so only paid tax in PA.

Of course that is not exactly the scenario you are talking about but shows some of steps buying out of state.

Now, the taxes; PA and Vermont have what is called a reciprocity agreement in place, by that it is "assumed " you will pay the appropriate s.tax at the time of registry in that state i.e. VT . As the other poster mentioned, " Vee have ways" . Jurisdiction ultimately becomes; "where it is domiciled" or "principally garaged", that being VT. Complicated enough for you yet!

Do this, if you're religion bothers you; register it, pay the taxes in your home state, plate it there, attach the plates and move it to VT. I for one would like to see "catch me if you can" play out. But thats just me.

Who does what, be honest? When I moved to AZ my trailer stayed in Indiana on an RV lot we owned. When I went to transfer insurances they told me they needed to write me a separate Indiana policy for the trailer since that is where it is the majority of the time. Maybe other companies are different. We have subsequently sold the lot and have the trailer with us now and it is insured in AZ. That was my experience.

No I didn't. Home state is Florida, correct. Re-read it inserting Florida for home state, that will help you understand how this could play out, if he chooses that route.
