What does LP cost in your area?

Recently we were hitching up to bug out on a week "get outta town"
trip and I knew I had an empty 20 lb LP tank on the trailer.
I -thought- I had a full one in the garage..... wrong!
Now I've got 2 empty tanks and it's Saturday afternoon.
Called around and found a LP filling station at a U-haul major truck
rental place.
On the phone they said it would run around $19 "depending" because
they charge by the gallon.
When they filled them the guy said most tanks are not empty and usually
hold about 4 galloons.
My tanks held 5 gallons and the bill was $24 per tank

Found out later upon my return there was a Walgreens 2 miles from me
that has a tank trade cage out back and they were trading empty for
full tanks for $18.

I have painted my tanks and they are a "matched set" so I hate to trade
them in but I could have saved $12 and a significant drive in Saturday
afternoon traffic down a major busy highway.

What did you pay the last time you bought LP ??

I paid $24.94 for 6.5 gallons @ $3.99 per gallon for my last fill. That was for 30 lbs. of propane.

I keep a record of my fills, and just noticed that each time I get 30 lbs. (weighed each time), the volume ranges from 6.5 gals. to 7.0 gals. The trend seems to be the 7.0s in the hotter months, and the 6.5s in the cooler months. Hmmmm.

I want to keep my own tanks, so exchange is not an option for me, plus I haven't ever seen 30 lb. tank exchanges around here, just 20s. I did try to get my 20 lb. gas grill tank filled a couple of months ago.....figured that might be cheaper than an exchange. It could not be filled because of an expired hydro, so I ended up exchanging that puppy.

with no road tax on it, makes u wonder why propane cost more than gasoline or diesel. guess it is the low volumn and because they can. more than likely at the retail end...they have the most invested in it.

Last time
I called a local hdware store and he said 24 bucks so I went to the
U-haul because they had said $19 on the phone.
When I got there and my tanks were full it was $24 each there too!!

At those prices I'm gonna have to re-think getting my tanks filled vs
just exchanging them.
It used to be a few bucks cheaper to get them filled but when the price
is fluctuating that much sometimes the exchange tanks haven't caught
up with the per gallon price at LP filling stations.

Just called a big tank commercial LP filling station.
They said a 20 lb tank is currently $18.02 incl tax.
This is a flat rate not meter/per gallon rate.
My tanks are always empty so flat rate is fine with me.
It's a 7 mile drive out in the country each way.
Wish I could haul 'em on my motorcycle!!

Update, just called Walgreens they have gone up to
$21.20 incl tax for exchange tanks.
Looks like $3 cheaper per tank for filling vs exchange but it's
more miles driving......

Mtnguy, If you are in C'ville I filled my tanks at Amerigas a few months back and they charged me 2.99/gal. 6.7 gallons plus tax cost me $20.29.

A lot of the exchange tanks aren't full. That is where they make their money. In other words, if a 20 pound tank, holds 20 pounds that is 5 gallons. The exchange tanks will only have 4 gallons. The scales will tell the truth. Most places around here have a set price for set size of tank. Doesn't matter what it takes. We charge $24.00 for a 30 lb. tank at the dealership. I think it is $19.00 for a 20 lb. tank.

Thanks. Is that the Amerigas on High St. ?? I have been going to Southern States on Profitt as a matter of convenience. I am always looking for a bargain, but if I have to drive into town I may think twice on that.

Was in Belleville, Kansas last week. A 30lb bottle fill was $19.50.....I think that was about $8.00 less than here in OK a couple months ago.

Up here in Nova Scotia at Costco which is the cheapest place. I pay $0.63 per pound which on a completely empty tank works out to about 15 bucks with taxes.

Mntguy, I'm not sure if Amerigas is still on High. I go to their main office/building that is on 250 E just outside of C'ville. Go up Pantops and after you go under I-64 they are located about a 1/2 mile on the left.

I have never heard of a flat rate for propane around here, I cant remember how much per gallon, but the last time I filled up I was pretty much empty with both 30# tanks, filled up it was around $37. It seems that everyone is getting in on the exchange tanks, but I would rather keep my tanks and fill them at a propane dealer, knowing how my tanks are handled and stored is worth a lot to me.

Last fill here for an empty 30# was $16.50, not bad I think.

The TT I had (two campers ago) had registered 30lb tanks. Registered in the sense that they were a matched set (serial numbers) and the numbers were registered to that VIN somehow. When I bought it, I was told to NOT exchange those tanks because of the registration. Since there aren't 30lb exchanges that I am aware of, it worked out. Long story short: I couldn't exchange those tanks and always had to have them filled. I think that is a better deal anyway, because it is on a scale and you pay for the gas you get instead of a flat fee for a tank that may or may not be full. Around my area for a 20lb BBQ grill sized tank you'll pay about 19 or 20 for a refill, and about 24-25 for an exchange.

Our local dealer fills the portable bottles at a flat rate also. He has been doing this for ever. Not sure how he gets away with doing it but he does. I thing right now the price is about 15 bucks.

Staying at Wild duck Campground in Scarborough, Maine. The gas company comes around every Saturday morning, if you need gas you just wave down the truck and they fill your gas at your camper;$20.00. My local hardware store in NH charges $15.00. These prices are for a 20lbs bottle.
