Where do they come up with the asking prices.

Over the course of the last few weeks, I have noticed quite a few RV's and tow vehicles listed in the FRF classified sections where the person listing must be smoking crack. 17 yr old trucks and the asking price is double what the clean retail book numbers are?, along with trailers listed for over $6K or more above average retail numbers. I have a 2015 GMC Sierra double cab, long bed, 4WD, SLE+, with Leer cap, and about 11K miles. First $90,000 takes it.

I have several thoughts. 1. You can ask what ever you want doesnt mean its going to sell. 2. just cause your upside down on your loan doesnt mean I have to be. 3. I was born at night but not last night.

With modern technology values are pretty easy to find and only a fool would pay over. (minus the show room quality ten year old Harley Ultra Classic I bought with 5,000 miles on it.)

I will say though I am shocked at how many do actually sell though! Crazy, it's posted and two days later is marked as sold. Maybe I should put mine up for 18k and then get that 5er!

Quiet guys! The reality police will be here in second.

Good time to sell before the RV bubble bursts...

This thread reminds me of Barnum & Bailey Circus (A fool and his money). This forum is no different than retail RV sales. I've seen the same model RV sell from 73k down to 53. This is not adding wholesalers. Which I've seen same at 45k.

Just because something sells doesn't tell you what it sold for.

That is correct but, at least my thought, when someone makes an offer (whatever it is) they either got what they wanted or close to it when it goes up today and is sold the next. Otherwise they would hold out hoping for a higher offer making it saty up and unsold for a longer period of time.

Down here and near a beach tourists flock to there is a saying "put any price on it and a Yankee with a pocket full of money will buy it". Sometimes it takes a few seasons, but it generally goes.

Springtime. LOTS of newbie buyers who want to hit the road FAST and, aren't smart shoppers. Decades ago, I senior I knew decided he wanted to drive from NY to go fishing in FL. He walked into an auto dealership and asked what he could drive away in that afternoon. Some salesman made a fat commission that day.

Setting the asking price involves a very scientific device called a "Random Number Generator". Ask it for three numbers between one and a million then pick the highest one!

Click CLASSIFIEDS.

We see it all the time on the local buy sell and trade.
They claim to have paid so much for the item yet the clearance sticker with a lower price is on it

If you are going by KBB or NADA website to define 'retail', you will be hopelessly undervalued. Those are the numbers a dealer will show you on trade in, but those are not in any way a valid determination of a vehicles value. The NADA "black book" and Manheim Market Report are far more accurate, but not available to the general public.

For instance, my 7.3 Excursion lists on KBB.com as worth $5500. Anyone offering me that won't even get the indignity of being laughed at. Hell... the transmission alone is worth that much (and I got the receipts to prove it). I could get probably 4 times that for my truck within a weeks time, if I wanted to.

Granted, there are some people out there who took the phase "buy low, sell high" a bit too far. There is no end of people trying to sell 2-3 year old campers and asking more than what I could buy a new one for. I guess they paid full MSRP or something and think selling a $45k camper for $40k is a screaming bargain. But remember, when selling, start high. You can always come down. Not so easy to go up.

Tim

Exactly. If you want to sell something for X amount then advertise it for more than X and then when you let the buyer "talk you down" they think they got a good deal and you still get the amount you originally wanted.
