I'm thinking they are on the upper step in. I unscrew each screw on left and right, then what....how do I open to reveal them...am I even looking in the right place?
Well ... I think you're looking in the right place - it's certainly right for later model years. The upper step should (?) have a hinge at the back allowing you to lift the front of the tread to get at the batteries.
