CO detector

I went outside last night at about 1:30 A.M. and I heard a smoke alarm going off. Turned out to be the CO detector in my Solera. I've had this happen before and I remember some comments about it on the Forum. Any one else have problems with their CO detectors.

If it operates like the one I have at home, the detector is designed to sound an alarm when battery is low. My understanding is that the detectors are wired directly to battery, not through the batt. disconnect. I have no idea at what charge level they sound, but you may want to check batteries (charge & electrolyte level) next time you hear it go off.

If it's going off and battery level is good, I'd presume you may have a bad detector.

Switch

I ended up putting mine on a switch. Only turn it on when we head out to go camping.

Thanks for the idea but I've noticed that it only does it when I have it plugged in. right now it's plugged into and shore line from my garage. I haven't noticed it go off when on battery alone?

Now that IS weird! It does sound like you may have a faulty detector. Should be in warranty.

I may have to explore that option.

I had the same problem. Even with new batteries it chirped. I found one at Lowes for $19. They used to be $50

Ours did the same thing. It was defective. The factory had a bad bunch of them, but they should have run through those by now.

What did you have to do to get it replaced?

Mine goes off too when on shore power and when 90 plus degrees outside.

When the dealer buys them by the gross from the lowest bidder, you usually get a perty cheapo CO detector. Mine died after 1 year so I went to Homely Depot and bought another for $29.00. So far so good.

you have a good point it does go off when it's hot outside. Last year when I had it parked and plugged in at the in-laws (out in the desert in Calif.) and the first time it got over 90 here at home. Must be the heat?

I had the same problem all weekend to the point where my dogs were shaking from the noise. I ended up pulling the fuse and dropped the coach off at the dealer where I am demanding a replacement.

I hear what your saying, problem is my dealer is 135 miles away and I hate to drive all the way up there for a device that I can replace myself if I could get the replacement detector.

25 bucks for one with a digital read out so you know exactly what is going on. Every RV should have one. There is no guessing! You don't have to stand there wondering if you really have a co problem or a faulty detector. You can see the number climbing long before it gets to a dangerous level.

One problem with the detectors in the RV's is they are CO and gas detectors. most of the detectors you get at hardware stores are going to be CO or CO and fire detectors.

I contacted the closest dealer to me today, waiting to hear back from them on it. It would cost me as much in fuel taking my rig up there as a new detector. Hate to do that for something this small.

Henry: If it were me, I'd purchase a replacement - you can get a plugintothewall type, then I'd leave the OEM one in place, don't throw it away... you could file claim and have it replaced next time you're in dealer's area; always nice to have a backup! Would your dealer initiate the claim by phone and possibly send you the unit for a self install? You could remove and send to them if necessary? Just some thoughts.

Ed

I just heard back from the dealer and their trying to work with me on the issue. They said the only problem is the warranty period is a bet over by about 10 days? They said they'd put in for it just the same and see what the factory says. Other wise they'll send me out a new detector. Have to see what happens next. Guess I get to see if the extended warranty will cover it.
