DEF pump

Was driving to Canton Texas Wednesday and engine light came on. My GPS told me I need exhaust system check. Call the nearness MB dealer. They told me to bring it in the next morning. Well the computer told them the DEF pump had gone out. Good news was they had one in stock. Bad news was even thou camper only has 21200 miles on it. The warranty was over due to time limit. They told me the pump would be $1400 to replace. Then I remember we had bought extend warranty when we bought camper. Only ended up having to pay $100. Much better than $1400.

What extended Warranty did you go with? We have under 3/36 on our chassis and are thinking of purchasing the MB chassis warranty in addition to a "house" warranty.

We bought an extended warranty the dealer had. We bought the united used. It only had 2000 miles on it. I'll have to ask the wife what the name of the company. I know it's for the whole camper.

Your dealer is mistaken. The DEF pump is part of the vehicle emissions system and that is the warranty you should be looking at. Check your MB warranty section and you will see its a covered item. Get your $100 bucks back!

I'm not home right now but look at this link. The 2014 Sprinter Van. Ahead of its time. Again. The warranty is the same for all years from 2010 on. Emissions are 5 yrs from date in service and 100K miles.

Looks like pump is covered for 3 years/ 50000 miles. Camper is older then 3 years.

DEF is injected into the exhaust after combustion to address the NOX emissions. By federal law, all California emissions systems, which are all sprinters sold in the US, are covered by 5 yr and 100K miles federal emissions warranty. You need to contact MB directly to get your clarification.

The pump is electric and in the tank. That's why they have to drain tank.

My Nox sensor went out, the sprinter shop replaced it today. Our Check Engine light came on while retuning from short trip. Took it in and they said we ran it out of def. It ran out in less than 3000 miles of topping it off! They said that shouldn't happen so they investigated more, since our warning light never came on or it didn't go into limp mode. Hope this is all, and we get back on the road soon! Getting into the good camping weather now!Click image for larger version

In the old days...a lot of HD emissions were just 3/36 some special stuff had 5/50. The owners warranty manual will spell it out clearly.

Read post number 6, it's already been discussed, we're just waiting on how the warranty work went, and more importantly, what failed and maybe a why it did would be great.

Unfortunately the MB rep you had contact with was not versed in the Federal Emissions Law. DEF's delivery system, was the result of years of research to lower NOX emissions on diesel engines. Essentially the same theory as catalytics burn unspent engine exhaust prior to explusion.

But, since you said earlier that you had a policy in force that covered part of it, less your deductable, there comes a time to fish or cut bait.

Looks like this is a fight for another MB Sprinter owner some other time. MB is WRONG in misinforming the public on not being part of the 5 year 100K emissions warranty, period.

Not sure about other years, but see the 2014 Sprinter warranty manual, available here:

http://www.mbsprinterusa.com/files/m...nty_Manual.pdf

Pages 14 and 15 describe the required Federal Emissions warranty, 5 years, 100,000 miles, and specifically list the DEF pump as a covered item.
