I don't know if this will help anyone but pilot/flying j's and I'm sure others have def at the pump at the commercial pumps and by me near St.Louis it is 2.69 a gallon.

Since Urea is the major component of animal urine, doubt you could contaminate it's nitrogen qualities. Any float would work.

Well GM say's the DEF message will come on at 1000 to go. At that point add approx. 3.5 gallons. They were asked about a gauge and they said because the message comes on at 1000 miles there is no need for a gauge. I believe all 2012 and later 3/4 and 1 ton trucks have DEF gauges. So GM is saying we blew it by not putting a gauge on the 2011 models but we will cover our butts by bringing up the 1000 mile message. Mine is going in Monday cause it never comes on at 1000. Once at 727 and the last one was 498

If you're referring to the old fashioned mechanism for measuring the level of a liquid in a container and reading it on a gauge - the mechanism consisted of a floating device of some sort attached to the end of a rod that floated on the top of the liquid. The rod was connected by mechanical means to a gauge - thus the reading of the liquid level.

Simple and effective - it worked in its day

Also B47, even further back ,the earliest gauges were simply a cylindrical tube that rose or fell as the liquid was used. The driver could see the "stick "in front of his wind shield. Never let you down.
