My dealer quoted $4,193 for the 3.2 Onan diesel generator last December.

WOW !
I guess that is what they cost after researching.
I'll think I will stick with the propane and buy another toy instead.

Thanks

I think you'll be rather pleased with the propane for a variety of reasons. I originally wanted the diesel generator but they weren't available at the time of my order (2/2014). The propane generator is quieter, burns cleaner, requires less maintenance, and won't stop running if your Sprinter fuel tank gets down to 1/4 of a tank. The only downside is Solera's relatively small propane tank which is 10 gallons. The new units may be coming with a larger propane tank.

Working on that larger tank still. Proto's coming in. We still need to shed weight, so might need to rethink the glass shower door in that case.

I chose the diesel generator and paid about $2500 after negotiation. Heard good and bad about propane and diesel. I just didn't want to worry about finding propane. Can always find diesel. Doubt it will get used much either way, but it was a personal choice.

I just matched the spec sheet.
They seem to have the same DB rating at 68.
Diesel also weighs a little more than the propane.
Probably go with the propane and bring along a 2.5 or 5 gal spare (I use it for the bbq also) and the fittings for the "extend a stay" .
I am going to eject the glass door on the shower anyways for reduced weight, comfort and ease of maintenance.

It seems to me, to extend dry camping, you need not just larger LP tank, but also larger fresh water and grey tanks. But that's not what the sprinter based coaches are about. So I would just work with what I have, and fill up/dump frequently.

In addition to camping, we use our 24R for weekend errands with the family (2 kids and a golden retriever) instead of a SUV. We turn the Sprinter engine off and run the generator and house A/C for whoever is staying behind. It's so much nicer to be able to stretch out, watch TV, have your own private bathroom Etc.

I opted for the diesel generator when I found that the lp gen burns 0.6 gallons per hour on a moderate load; only a 9.8 gallon lp tank. Would rather have the propane available for cooking, furnace and hot water.

Now that we have 280 watts worth of solar, the LP genset is hardly ever used. We also have the sweet adapter to hook up a 5 gallon tank just in case.

How many panels are you using? Please share your set-up and any pics. Getting ready to add solar this summer. Thanks!

In regards to Solar, I installed a Unisolar PowerBond Laminate, Amorphous 136W 24V Panel that runs the length of the roof and a ALEKO All Black 140W 24V Monocrystalline Solar Panel that fits perfectly on the front drivers side of the 24R roof, ahead of the dinette skylight. Both are connected to a Steca Solarix (Instapark Branded) MPPT 2010 Controller. All purchased on Amazon. In addition, I have a portable Renogy 70W Monocrystalline panel with a Morningstar SunSaver Controller that I can locate in a sunny area of a wooded campsite, just in case of shade issues. To convert to 120VAC, I use a Samlex Pure Sine Inverter.

In regards to adding to the Solera's LP capacity, I used the Camco 59123 Propane Brass Tee with 4 Port with 5' and 12' Hose, which has multiple functionality.

Cheers,

Jay

Sounds like a nice set-up Jay. So does the MPPT feed the inverter directly and thus bypassing the batteries? You mentioned a 24v solar panel system so is there a way to keep the 12v batteries charged too? I always thought inverters ran off batteries and solar charged the batteries back up. Sorry for the confusion. If there's a better way I would be interested.

The charge controller works with 24v or 12v panels. In this case, it converts the 24V from the my panels down to 12 and is connected to the batteries in the rig. Since the Unisolar panel only comes in 24V, I just had to make sure my second roof panel was also 24V and of like wattage. My portable panel is a 12V version, so I have a separate charge controller for it. The inverter is connected to the batteries.
