Dumb Question #1

I'm trying to figure out storage needs for camping with a Solera and it might be a little short. Can the roof be used with a car topper storage unit or is there any way of using the roof for more stuff? Not too many pictures of the roof on the interweb.

There are no dumb questions - just dumb answers :-)

The Solera has not a lot of cargo carrying capacity from a weight standpoint. You should travel light if possible, plus putting things on the roof at the highest point is going to affect handling pretty bad. Our 24S has sufficient storage for our needs - which might not hold true for your needs. In some instances we tow our Samurai and that provides additional transport storage when needed.

If you travel with 4 people I can see that storage space is going to be an issue. But then you should as well only carry about 100lbs in gear as we'll or be over GVWR...

If you plan an extended stay somewhere you probably will need to tow a toad - which adds storage..

End of dumb answer :-)

An alternative to a toad might be a trailer. Agree with Reiner on the weight issue - plus stuff on the roof would be quite inconvenient to access. A small, two wheel cargo trailer could carry a lot of stuff and comfortably stay within the GCWR, could be backed (unlike a toad), and would be simple.

We added a stowaway2 hitch carrier for bulky stuff (like my golf clubs!) The swingout feature still allows access to the rear compartment door. Not a perfect solution and competes with the bike rack but it does provide options.
