Remember current seeks the path of least resistance, just like water. The rod end with the loss is attached to ground via the threads. The loss will spread as the anode is used.

Buy a new one they are $9.95 on ebay as of today. I wouldn't put that back in my tank to save a few bucks. It's normal ware but being so cheap just put a new one in before next season and go on your way.

Much better things to do with my money.
Wash that one off; tape it up and stick it back in for another year.

Me likewise Herk, still running our original and it isn't even half gone. Carry a new one in the wh compartment along with a 1-1/16" socket and 1/2" extension.

Do you "replace it" advocates replace rolls of toilet paper when they are only 1/3 used just to keep from looking cheap? Anode rods are consumables just like toilet paper is. Use 'em up.

Mine was close to your pic in June when I drained my water heater and flushed it out. For 10 bucks at my local RV parts store.....I just replaced mine.
