Oil and filter

I was surprised to find our oil at Walmart today - for 23.88 for 5 qt! According to the label it fits the Mb specs 229.3, 229.5....also available in 1qt container for 7.88...
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-0W...5-qt./23636902

I need help in finding the right oil filter - any help? Would like to buy at Napa or Autozone...

Is that Walmart oil rated for MB diesel? MB recommends ESP 0W30 229.52.
Also Advance auto carries the filter by Purolator that is made in Germany. Same filter as MB. Napa ran a sale on the oil a couple months back. Mobil 1 ESP 0W30 $5.99 qt.

Mobil 1 0W-40 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil, 5 qt. - Walmart.com

Ok, here is the skinny on this topic. First, DO NOT use that oil in your sprinter. The MB spec you need is 229.51 or the latest spec 229.52. They have discontinued the Mobil 1 ESP formula M 5w-40 and have replaced it with mobil 1 esp 0w-30. Also my research turned up MB brand 5w-30 which states it can only be used in a sprinter. If you use non "esp" mobil branded oil, you risk clogging your DPF diesel particulate filter, and I suspect you run the risk of engine warranty issues as well. Unfortunately, since there are only about 25,000 sprinters sold each year, neither wally world, advanced auto, autozone, etc. carry it as an on the shelf item. Hope that helps. DIYers can save an easy $150 bucks, doing it yourself.

His MH is a 2013, warranty an issue?

Would he not be better off using the oil his manual says?

Other Approved Oil

Another 229.51 approved oil is available from Amazon at an attractive price:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KQEHHPG/...HI5S3OMX&psc=1

It is
TOTAL 188058-3PK Quartz INEO Long Life 5W-30 Engine Oil - 5 Quart (Pack of 3)

I think you can also get MB OEM oil filters from them.

The Alibaba link identifies this as a product of France. The approval 229.51 indicates that this specific product was approved by Mercedes for the OM642 engine. I have always used Mobil I oils in the 5 other Mercedes automobiles that I have owned, but will be happy to use any products approved by the excellent Mercedes engineers.

Duly noted. However, upon further research, MB recommends Mobil 1 0w-30 which now carries the next level cert., being 229.52.

They state; "MB 229.52 Oils meeting this specifications must have lower ash content, at least 1% better fuel economy compared to the requirements of MB 229.31 and MB 229.51 and better oxidation stability for biofuel compatibility. Can also be used where an MB 229.31 or an MB 229.51 oil is required. Just like MB 229.5 and MB 229.51 this spec requires a long life oil."

I like this oil better for these reasons: 1. lower ash content. 2. better when biofuel is used(sometimes you can't avoid buying that crap) 3. better fuel economy, even if only by 1%.
just sayin'

Well - that forum prevented me making a mistake. I did not see the difference of 292.5 vs 292.51 - thanks for the replies!

One thing I do not understand is what does oil have to do with fuel or fuel filter? It should never be in contact with each other? Maybe somebody can enlighten me....

Some oil even, though miniut amounts does get into you exhaust and the wrong additives could damage the particle filter. Also the turbo charger requires the correct spec.

I stopped at the Mercedes dealer last week and wanted to pick up a couple quarts of there oil. This is what they gave me. Cost under $10 per at.

Did the dealer provide the right oil?
