Oil change

Just a question. We only put 3-4k per year, but Mercedes says must change yearly anyway. Can I just drain out oil and put in new oil without changing filter?

Not to sound mean, but you can do what ever you want to do, just remember the old Fram commercial, You can pay me now or pay me later. For the price of a filter why not change it.

I called Mercedes
They told me every 10k or yearly is what is called for. I don't understand why. I just don't want to be denied a warrantee claim

Couple things;

A filter is about $11 bucks and it takes about 15 minutes to change it out. Enough said on that.
Now on oil. Oil actually degrades over time, al beit, syn mobil 1 has a much longer shelf life being a "true synthetic", than conventional oil. All oils "acquire" impurities as part of combustion, aka slight blow by, sometimes fuel contamination, etc. Some moisture may also slightly degrade it as well. Your MB 3.0 diesel is truely a marvel of engineering, if you take care of it.

MB recently went to 15K intervals for I believe the '14 and on model year(s). I for one, wouldn't go past 10K, as is speced in the pre-14's. Just sayin'

Oil breaks down over time. One of the causes is water in the oil caused by condensation. The water gets boiled out of the oil every time you drive more than 20 minutes. So when a motorhome sites for long periods you get lots of water and high oil break down. Thus the once a year requirement.

This is from the MB 2013 Sprinter operators manual. It differs from the maintenance manual which states 10,000 miles. I change my oil more frequently, especially since I tow. Mobil recommends yearly or recommended mileage, which ever comes first.

Interval for oil change
Oil change intervals depend on the vehicle's
operating conditions and the quality of the
engine oil used. The on-board computer
automatically shows the date for the next oil
change as an event message in the display.
Only by using engine oil with a particularly
high quality grade, e.g. according to Sheet
Number 228.51 of the Mercedes-Benz
Specifications for Service Products, can the
maximum interval for oil change be achieved.
We recommend having the oil changed at a
qualified specialist workshop.

If you're only doing one oil change a year and you're concerned with warranty - I'd take it to the dealer and let them service it.

Our 2105 has a maximum of 20,000 miles per M-B.

I discussed this with the local M-B Sprinter dealer and they suggest every 10K or annually. I'm going to go with their recommendation as the oil change, even at M-B, is still a lot cheaper than a engine rebuild or replacement! Add in potentially having to use B20 bio-diesel on a trip and it is good insurance in my opinion...

Especially since my DW really wants a M-B SL.... I think I'll be going alone on any service trips to our local dealer!

That's like washing your feet and putting your dirty sox back on. Most of the contaminants that were filtered out of your oil are still in your filter. That's what filters do. Spend the very, very few dollars and do it right. IMHO

I just had my oil changed at 15,500 miles, about a year at the usual place I get oil changes with a Valvoline oil that Mercedes approves on their website. It cost $169, the Mercedes dealer wanted $400 and the Freightliner Dealer $379. Does anybody know how to reset the oil change notice on a 2014 Prism LE2150 without the steering wheel buttons. I have tried a method that was on a U Tube and it did not work, it involved holding down the lower button until it beeped and then following a procedure. I never get the beep. Any ideas?

I did not get a beep on mine when I was playing with that screen. Wanted to see if I could scroll though. Which I could. I followed the instructional Utube someone on the Sprinter forum recommended. Other than the oil and filter anything else due at 15,500? What oil did you use? BIG savings vs the dealer

I have used the Youtube procedure more than once and it has worked each time. It takes several seconds for the peep to sound and it is not that loud.

I would review the procedure again then give it another try.

If you just pulled into a valvoline quick oil change and they said they had your oil on hand that meets spec 229.52, you should ask them for the data sheet so you can "review" that claim.

And, if I were you, I would go back if you already had it done to ask for the spec sheet. The wrong oil WILL foul up your emmisions system, AND, heres the important part, if you can't prove you used the spec oil with "written" documentation (i.e. oil spec sheet) MB WILL void your warranty related to any failures associated there with. Just sayin'

You will be surprised what you can find out, just ask them.

Thanks for replying, I will try it again, the valvoline oils that Mercedes has tested for 229.51 are Synpower MST 5W40 Full Synthetic and Synpower XTREME MST C3 5W40. Everything else on their 15,000 mile list was things like checking the belts for wear, windshield wipers etc., nothing that requires an ace mechanic. The 30,000 mile includes more. There was a maintenance record with my manual as well as on the internet.

Thanks Still Kickin, the Valvoline Dealer I used was my usual mechanics shop. Most quick lube places would scare me with the Mercedes. I got the oil spec info right from Mercedes, a list of oils that they have tested. The only oil from the US that meets 229.52 that I saw on the list was Mobil 1 ESW 0-30.

My point exactly. But anyway, your next big item will be your fuel filter change. Just helped a friend do his to learn the process. Very informative. I'll tackle that soon myself, as it's not that difficult, but I had the luxury of helping a friend, who did it before. Cost of filter from Freightliner about $70 bucks, MB I hear charges well over $375. Time wise took about 1 1/2 hrs. Part of the time is to swap out the WIF sensor from the spent to the new filter. That was, in my view the most difficult step. But, when, like I said, get to see it first, it all makes sense.
