Quality of diesel fuel
Wanted to get some information about the best diesel for the Mercedes, are there different grades? I have never owned a diesel and want to use the highest quality fuel. Thanks

There are not really different grades ( like gas), but there are varying amounts of Biodiesel and sulfur. Check your owners manual an follow it.

What is available at pumps today is what you put in your car, and what is approved for use in all diesel vehicles. You'd have to read further to find out if you can use biodiesel in your vehicle. Diesel vehicles these days have multiple fuel filters and a water separator, meaning your vehicle does most of the work in making sure the cleanest fuel makes it to the injectors.

Diesel was standardized in the US as follows; Highway Diesel Program -- a 15 parts per million (ppm) sulfur specification, known as ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD), was phased in for highway diesel fuel from 2006-2010. All diesel now meets that standard. There are separate threads that deal with the state governments and their bio blends.

I only use diesel from stations that push a lot. So we stay away from stations that big rigs do not frequent.

You would think that industry and government would work together. How about government stays out of our business for a change. Otherwise the economic loss to consumers will only increase, and only one side of that equation really cares. Leave us alone.

Like others posted: Fresh fuel is best sulfur PPM is set. A cetane level between 45 and 55 is best. (burns cleaner/less knock) I believe 40 is the minimum in the US, Europe has higher standards.

We are in Europe and recently filled our fuel tanks with"premium diesel" only cost a penny a liter more and have had a trouble free year operating what had been a problematic heating system. Thank you for the info on cutane level, it is a bit more complicated than a gas engine.

Is there value in using a fuel additive to boost the cetane?

Adding Cetane might affect warranty.
This is from MBS operators manual.
Fuel additives
! Do not use any fuel additives except a
flow improver. Fuel additives can cause
malfunctions and engine damage.

If you live in the northern part of the US you may find 3 types of diesel at the pump- #1, #2, and blended. Spring through fall we use #2 like the rest of the country and in the cold months we use #1 or a blend of #1 and #2. "Premium diesel" is often another name for #1. It is not a better quality oil but just refined to be thinner. It produces lower MPG and is more expensive.

Keeping in mind it is all adulterated with Bio. MB says, "all over 5% may void your warranty.

In Idaho its winter blend or regular. My truck drops a full mile or more to the gallon when we go to winter blend which is a blend of #2 and #1 so there is less BTUs in the fuel. I always add a cetane booster even in the summer if I remember. Keeping the tank full stops condensation and the growth of algae. I change fuel filters once a year its cheap insurance.

In my experience, in automotive diesels, yes. We (county fleet) saw a notable reduction in turbo and EGR issues when running cetane boosters in our light duty diesel. There is a saturation level so read your dosing information to avoid waste.
We run lubrication additives in our larger diesels and we saw a reduction in injector failures.

I have been seeing lately that some stations and truck stops are beginning to sell #2 diesel fuel with up to 20% bio diesel. As others have already stated this can void most warranties. You have to be very careful at the pumps and read the fine print prior to pumping any fuel.
