Question for bclemens about engine oil

2011 Solera. Can you tell me/us what motor oil is installed in new engines? I would like to know in the event I need to add some.
It's my opinion that replacement oil should be the same as original.

brand does not matter as much as the type and weight of the oil. Diesel oil is not the same as Gas engine oil, etc. I would use what the owners manual says to use.

That's one that I can't answer. I agree that the type is more important than brand. It is whatever Mercedes puts in there. I'll see if I can track down an actual brand from Mercedes.

Thanks for the information. My Solera has less than 5K miles and the oil on the dipstick is in the OK range but I am an eternal pessimist about things that are capable of going wrong.

Walmart? I have not been able to find the correct 228.51 / 229.51 oil from Walmart around my way. PepBoys had a MB spec approved (can't think of its name off the top of my head) Mobil 1 5-w40 for $10.00 a quart.

That is what we used to top off the 1/2 quart we used in the first 3K.

The one at walmart is not the right oil. Mobil 1 only makes one grade of oil that meets mb specs. I'll post it when I get home today
