Walking On 24R Roof

Is there a recommended way to walk on a 24R roof to install a cover over the RV for storage? Is it best not to walk on the roof?

You can walk on the roof. I am not to steady on my feet so I use good quality knee pads and crawl around up there. The roof is very strong and I have not had any problems. Been up there many times.

I concur, just don't use Home Depot brand Husky knee pads with slick plastic caps on them!

I was up last week to replace the king TV antennae I broke under a tree on cape Hatteras. I thought the limb would give way but the plastic did first. $150 lesson. I'm thinking of mounting a couple of forward and rear facing cameras up there and tie them to the rear camera. Any thoughts. That way I can see clearance much better.

Walking on the roof

Nothing wrong with walking on the roof.....just watch where you're stepping. Also,,,,,if you feel a soft spot, avoid stepping there. It could be a weakness in the superstructure of the roof or a rot-spot from water leaks.

So if a cover voids the full body paint warranty do you recommend not covering it during the winter?

Did you get any thing on the warranty issue in your owner packet? If not I'd check with FR on the cover issue.

Walking On 24R Roof

Here is what the Forest River Class C Motorhome Owner's Manual says (see picture). The indication is that if the unit does not have an installed ladder (or roof rack) the roof may not be reinforced enough to hold your weight. That said, it is hard to see where the 2401S,W and R roofs would be different. As we just bought an R despite the ladder deficiency (because of all its other great features, including massive storage space, we will check this with the dealer at PDI. We intend to always carry a folding ladder for reaching theClick image for larger version

Thanks for the posting, I don't think many see this as their going through their manuals. I have a factory installed ladder and I have been on the roof many times doing mod and covering the unit. Happy to see this notice, knowing now that it should be safe.

That's ludicrous...IMO of course.
I have covered all my vehicles for years and have kept the paint, interior, rubber etc lasting 2-3 times longer.
My RV is covered (unpainted) and the gelcoat will last much longer as a result.
A good quality breathable soft cover should not "harm" paint. Corners (if they are tight) may rub the paint off in some areas- you would need to be careful there. A plastic tarp will for sure rub the paint down.

Keep your painted RV uncovered and report back how long it takes for the clear to delaminate on the caps. They all do in time- unless you vinyl clear-cover them or wax the unit every month.
