bike rack on 308bhs

Does anyone know if the bumper on the vibe is rated for a 4 bike rack mount? Has anyone mounted a bike rack to their vibe?

Not sure if you would really have room. My 308BHS has the Grill and the spare tire already mounted to it.

bnussbaum, you'll find tons of reading here on the forum on this issue.

Those bike rack receivers you can buy at the dealer and clamp onto the bumper will result in the bikes bouncing as you drive down the road and exert a twisting force of the thin metal bumper. That twisting force is likely to pull the entire bumper away from the frame its attached to. Even 2 bikes is a big risk. If you know a welder, you could have them weld a hitch receiver to the Vibe's frame so that it will be well supported to resist the forces the bouncing bikes will exert.

I have enough space in the bed of my truck so I just put them there. If that's not an option for you, do some searching here and you'll find lots of ideas.

They do have a number of positive reviews. I carry a small generator on a aluminum carrier which weighs around 80lb. plus the spare tire carrier and felt this was the easiest was to go. No problems so far.

After reviewing these they wouldn't fit right on my bumper. I did some more research and ended up getting Stromberg Carlson (CC-275) Bike Bunk for Cargo Tray. This with a 4 bike rack works perfectly on my vibe. I will post pictures later this week.

Why? I have everything mounted and took for a test drive. It worked very well and didn't hinder my towing. Just curious on what concerns or issues you may have or know about. Thanks!

Rack

I mounted a 2 inch receiver to the bumper and added a 2 bike rack to it.
On a relatively smooth road it bounced so much the tie downs on the rack broke and I lost a bike off the back. Think god it wasn't in heavy traffic. My bikes go into the bed of my truck now.

Ok thanks. This actually mounts on the tongue above the jack, so it is mounted on solid frame. If you don't mind your bike being 6 ft up it seems to work well.

Tongue mounted bike racks, like yours, are the best option for carrying bikes on a TT.
Unless you are marginal on hitch capacity.

Yeah, I thought the same thing, but when I hooked the truck up and cranked it hard out of the driveway, it appeared I would hit the camper before I would hit the bike rack. I am taking it out for the first time this weekend, I can get some pics with it hooked up.

Thanks I look forward to seeing them. I wonder if the bikes will stick over the bed of your truck a little.

Love our 308BHS but I always feel its closer than normal behind our Suburban.

Just ran across this tread from a few months back. I notice on your pictures that you didn't have the propane tank cover installed. I assume it won't fit on with the bike rack. Is that correct? Also any problems with the rack interfering with your weight distributing setup?

I'm looking for a new bunkhouse TT and need something I can mount bikes to. My Stromberg works great on my current TT with a traditional A frame. I like the Vibe but not sure it compatible with bikes.
