We looked at one and love it but dealer told us that we needed a brake controller

Do we really need it to even bring it home or can we get her home and then get it before we travel?

Looked at one what? What is you're tow vehicle ? How far home from dealer? What kind of terrain ? Flat , hilly, interstate ,or back roads?

You don't need one if you hire a Transport Co. to (Haul It) to your home! Otherwise you need your (Brakes Hooked Up)! Youroo!!

If you have a vehicle with the 7 pin plug on the rear, adding a brake controller is a snap. Most manufactures make a plug in harness. You just hook the wires on the controller to the harness and plug it in under the dash. 10 - 15 minutes maximum.

If you do not have the factory 7-pin plug, it is a little trickier but not that hard to do.

For safety sake, get the controller.

In a panic situation you will be glad you did. I know you are just planning to travel from the dealer to home, but you never know what will pop-up along the way.

Oh heck, you should be fine! But the break control is a good thing to have,I am not sure , but you may also need to have a. 5 or 7 pin connector installed also.

I see you have an MKT, Ford is the best for the plug in harness. They use to put one in the glove box. Our MKT does not have the tow package, so I cannot tell you if there is one in the glove box or not. All our Ford trucks have had the harness in the glove box.

An R-pod? You can pull that home without a brake controller. But I'd just get one before you go and pick it up.
Stupid question-does the R-Pod have brakes? Some trailers don't have them. Don't ask me why...

If the r-pod has electric brakes and is required by your state law because of weight, then brake controller would be required to tow it legally.

Towing Laws | BrakeBuddy - Braking systems for motorhomes towing a vehicle
EXACTLY!

because the Rpod has electric brakes, it's generally required by law to have a brake controller in order for them to operate.

same thing with having a battery hooked up on the trailer, so there's power to the emergency breakaway switch, in case the trailer separates for the TV.

to your dealer for being honest and straightforward!

Worst case scenario- you only have a 4-pin connector and need the whole setup, it should run you $300 or so to have it installed by a trailer shop.

It must be nice to live in a country where they actually enforce the law. Sigh... (sarcasm font!)

@ie2special - So when do we get to see a picture of your new R-Pod?

Might be able to talk the dealer into throwing one in. We did. Sure it was the cheapest one they sell but if it comes down to a $90 brake controller to push a $25000 sale, they might do it.

Gotta be willing to walk if they don't though.

All R-Pod models have a 12V electric brake on each wheel, plus a breakaway cable that sets them to full ON if the trailer comes loose.

Buy an electric brake controller (e.g., Prodigy II) from your 'Pod dealer and ask him to install it as part of the deal. He probably will. Mine did.

If you can afford a Lincoln and an R-Pod don't cheep out on a $200 brake controller.

Ditto on getting the brake controller.

My sister's Yukon didn't have the 7-pin plug so I took it to U-Haul to install it which didn't cost much at all. The dealer installed the brake controller which didn't take long.

Exactly....all the money you save not getting a brake controller will not start to cover what you could lose if you need to stop fast.
