Update on trailer brakes.
Well it turned out that all but one brake had grease on the hub where the magnet makes contact. I replaced all 4 assemblies with new ones from etrailer. I used butt connectors and put shrink wrap on all connections to keep out moisture and repacked the wheel bearings by hand. Haven't had a chance to see how they work yet but am pretty sure they will be ok. The one brake that was actually working was almost down to the metal on the brake shoes so I assume it was doing 80% of the stopping.

Thanks for coming back and letting us know what you found.

It's a little troubling how many people have found grease on the brake assemblies recently.

One more update. Went camping over the weekend and my trailer brakes worked great. Could actually get them to lock up on dry pavement.
