2500HD 6.0L + 5th wheel

DW and I are looking into purchasing a 5er this season and would like to know if any of you are hauling a 5er with your 2500HD 6.0L. I've done all the weight calcs and can work backwards but we are wondering what model y'all are hauling and what insights you would share with this combo ?

Thanks for the help.

Pay attention to these 3 things. Payload, payload and payload. 3/4 ton payload will be the first weight you will exceed so buy a 5ver accordingly. There are 5vers that are 3/4 ton towable so just be aware of that.

I did the math and a 3/4 ton did not have the payload for my grand design so I went with a 1 ton DuraMax which added 900 more pounds to the payload and still have a single axel and regular size bed. A little hard to find but got one

Hauling a 5th wheel

Here is my setup
Trailer:
FORREST RIVER 315 WOLF PACK 12 39ft. 4 inches

Hitch:
Pulling with a Super Glide 5th wheel hitch 2700 Model which is 16K load and vertical load 4K

Truck:
Dodge RAM 2500 Turbo Diesel 6.0 Heavy Duty short bed

Mileage depends on where I am traveling but it is around 13 MPG if I keep my foot out of it and drive normal.

Driving speed:
always 65 in a 70
60 in a 65
and 55 in a 60

just to give you an idea, this way I can stop this big rig and not cause an accident.

I have a Silverado 2500 Duramax and pull a Cedar Creek 34 SATS. I believe this is in the 12000 pound range. I have pulled it through the Rockys several times and Alaska once. I have never had a problem with power or control.

Make sure you check your payload and pin weight-- A lot of people have 2500 diesels and are over their payload limit.

You can always go here:
http://chevroletforum.com/forum/vindecoder.php?
Enter your VIN. As long as you are certain about the rear axle ratio, the tech specs tab will guide you to what you can haul. This is what I used in deciding what was in my safe zone and what was not. These lookups are available for Fords also. Not sure about other males.
Hope this helps!

Chevy 6.0 gasser (not diesel)

I am pulling a 2014 Keystone Sprinter 269FWRLS with a 2009 Chevy 2500,Z71, extended cab 6.0 gasser. It has 3:73 gears with the 16" wheels. I have a Curt slider hitch in the 6' bed.

After dealing with the pogo and chucking effect I replaced the shocks with Rancho 5000 adjustable shocks. I also installed Firestone Airbags on the rear suspension to stiffen the ride up. The shocks and airbags helped but did not eliminate the problem.

My trailer is 32+' long, with a pin weight of 1670#, GVWR approx. 12000#.

I have pulled my trailer from Missouri to Arkansas to the Appalachians and back to Missouri with no problem. Depending on the wind it will pull sometimes in 6th gear but mostly 5th. I get 11 mpg on a great day but mostly 7 to 9 mpg depending on the speed and terrain. My empty around town mileage is 12 and HI way is 16.

If you want something that will pull this size of trailer with the cruise control on then look at a diesel. I have a friend with a 2007 diesel version pulling the same size trailer. He sets the cruise and forgets his trailer is back there.

FWIW

If I had it to do all over again I would by the diesel.

Truck GVWR

I know what the GVWR is and what it means, but sometime I wonder if it really mean anything. Example my hunting buddy had a 2010 Ram 2500 Extenda-cab, LB V-10 4x4 We loaded his Kodiak K-99 slide-in camper in it for the first time. Load didn't even make truck sit down 3 inches. Dry weight of camper 2500 lbs. not even touching over loads weight of camper and truck 10,000 lbs. GVWR on door 8800 lbs and this truck was marketed by Ram as the "Camper Special" So whos telling the truth about what a truck can or cannot carry. If your unit looks normal and handles fine that the chances of getting pulled over are pretty slim myself. I can't believe that everyone that hauls a slide-in camper or pulls a 5 th wheel or bumper pull are all at or under their GVWR

I had a 6.0 2500HD, I pulled both my Cardinal, and my Columbus with it. It pulled fine, but I was extremely overweight with both campers. I traded it in 2 years ago for a 1 ton with a duramax, I have not looked back. When I traded it in I found out that all except 1 bolt was blown off of the exhaust manifolds. I would imagine this is because of the was it acted on the hills, it went into passing gear at about 55000 on the tach.

2015 Chevy 2500 HD 6.0 L

Just purchased a used 2015 2500 HD with the gas engine to pull a travel trailer. I'm anxious to get it hooked up but have to wait for the weather to warm a bit.
It is good to see people pulling the heavy 5th wheels with no problems. Curious though, what mpg's are you all getting when you tow? I have a TT that only weighs about 6200 dry so I can't imagine ever being over 7000 lbs loaded.
I get about 13 mpg around town but again have not towed, just wondering what I should expect.

I would expect to get 8, maybe 9 towing that trailer. Less if you are bucking a stiff headwind.

I know with my 2005 2500HD I got 11-12 not towing and 6-8 while towing

Over on the jayco forum there's a thread where we tried to tell a guy he couldn't pull a fiver with 2000 pound pin weight with his 2014 Silverado 1500 half ton pickup. He argued vehemently because that vin checker showed he had a fiver pin weight capability of 2800 pounds...We finally convinced him he was in danger.

I plugged my 2500hd vin into that checker and it told me I had around 4000 pounds payload when I only have 2400+.
I don't trust all the specs on that vin checker.

It only works correctly if you understand what info pertains to your vehicle, which in the case of tow capacity, starts with the rear axle ratio.
The capacity on my vehicle changes almost 4,000 pounds from the lowest ratio to the next, and the layout of those difference on the same line requires some study. I have found the VIN reports to be correct for multiple fords and chevys but always confirm with another source like the trailer life truck guides. They've always matched for me.

a new 2500 won't have the payload to tow it. One reason why I traded my '16 2500 for a 3500, for the payload. Once I did the numbers, I would've been over the payload with just about every 5'er out there. However, a 2015 2500 may have the payload to tow the fiver you're looking at. My bro-in-law has a '11 2500 and has more payload then my '16 2500 did. I think it's over 3000#, if memory serves
