2nd AC or Large Frig

Which would you pick on a new 5th wheel? A side by side frig or 2nd AC in bedroom?

Well, if your from a hot part of the country, or travel a lot around the country, I would go with a 2nd AC unit. You can always go to the grocery store to restock the fridge.

X2! You can always run to the store to buy more food but you can't run to the store buy more cool.

Actually I'd pick both, it won't increase your monthly payment that much.

Get the fridge, then add the AC/HP yourself and save $400 if you need it which you will.

I'd go with the 2nd AC unit. Less weight and provides a higher comfort factor. The side by side fridge is probably going to mean less storage cabinet space too. Like others have said you can always restock the fridge when necessary.

Why is this presented as an either/or question? Is it a money issue or is it an issue of which camper to buy?

Generally, second ac units can be added on to most any camper. A bigger fridge on the other hand is not... which makes me think you are looking at two different campers.

Get the big fridge AND second ac! But, if I could only have one... it would be the ac.

I would get both in fact on the Cedar Creek Line the RV fridge is extra (attachment) and the residential is standard. You can buy the smaller 13 CU-FT RV fridge for $2,023 in 2016 model year. This is over and above the cost all ready for the 18 CU-FT residential refrigerator and inverter which are included already in the package purchase price which is a mandatory option.

You can keep your beer cold either way, but the refrigerator will be more convenient. Just sayin'.

Man. This is almost like "Would you rather be invisible or be able to fly?".......

I guess a/c but I can't imagine living without my residential refrigerator.

No, after thinking, I'd get the refrigerator, and see how hot I got with one A/C. THEN I'd add the 2nd A/C later if I needed it.

If you decide on the larger refrigerator, then make sure that the travel trailer you buy is wired for a 2nd AC. You can order brand new AC units with warranties from ebay for half the price of one from an RV dealer. You can get units with free shipping and no tax. I would go for a non ducted unit, hardest part of that ones installation is getting it onto the roof of your RV. I live in the deep south and a single 15K unit cannot cool a 32 ft. trailer sitting in the sun all day. However two can, installed my second unit two months ago.

One other thing to think about, is if the new a/c is connected to the ductwork, vs buying an aftermarket a/c unit and then you have the thing blowing down into the bedroom instead of into the ducts. Much better having the a/c tied into the duct work. My old Cedar Creek had a a/c unit installed later and the thing made so much noise I hardly ever used it. My new fifth wheel has the 2nd a/c from the factory and it is ducted along with the rear a/c, much quieter and so much more efficient.

This one is a no-brainer. It is 104 degrees today in southern Texas. Without the second air conditioner we would be on our way home. One thing I've learned after 40 years of doing this stuff is you can easily and quickly learn what to buy and when also where the nearest Walmart is. You can run out to get more beer but getting more air conditioning in a hurry is not going to happen.

We lived out of our camper for 10 days and had no issues with the standard evaporative cooled camper fridge. Just ran to the grocery every few days for more supplies and kept the beer in a cooler outside.

Living in Arizona, 2nd a/c is a no-brainer. When we first went full-time, only had 1 a/c. It went out in the summer (naturally) in Albuquerque. Couldn't get it replaced for 2 days - the 2 most miserable days of our lives. We vowed, that from then on we'd never have a rig without a 2nd a/c. By the way our refrigerator (RV type - electric/gas) never had any problem. Thus - we used the ice from it to help keep us cool - helped a little, but quickly melted. Good luck with your decision.

No doubt ~~ 2nd AC and ducted as well! Actually passed on a camper because it had the res fridge. They are not made to bounce down the road. Too many posts about icemaker leaking and/or freezing after winterization. When/if it needs replaced it will not go in/out the door ~~ rear window is removed and several people do a pass through. My trips are most often many hours and if I need road side rest to sleep ~~ no problem keeping the RV fridge cold 20 - 36 hours until plugged in again. If you are going to park it and never move it, could be another thought. My Montana has a 4 door (not side by side) RV fridge ~ I think 13 cu ft.
