Sounds like the dealership does not have a clue..... or it can't tow an electric brake trailer. I would also check around even the Toyota customer service...... (not the dealership).
Good Luck !!!

The wireless brake controllers work with electric trailer brakes. My son uses it on his 2018 Grand Cherokee and his Jayco Hybrid. He loves the wireless and the handheld control....won't rack you knees when climbing in and out.

4 to 7 adapter
For about $15 on eBay you can purchase the 7 pin unit male with both the 4 pin connector and the extra leads on it. You can eithr make your own adaptor plugging the 4 pin into your vehicle or install the 7 pin on your vehicle and plug the 4 pin in. That looks much better. I needed to do that with a 1700 lb pop up recently. The 7 pin to the 4 pin is usually wired correctly from the factory on these units. As for trailer brakes, you should probably hook those up if the trailer is equipped depending upon the weight. Adding a small brake controller and running a line back there isn’t that difficult!

Just go to a U-Haul trailer center and let them install the correct connector.

Better safe than sorry
The advice here to get the brake controller and verify the hitch rating is right on the money.
I pull my RPOD with a Nissan Xterra with a V6 and use the heavy duty hitch and added a brake controller. Adding the brake controller will fix your 4 prong issue as well as allow you to use the trailer brakes - a definite need with that Highlander.
Happy Camping!

I have a 2017 Gilander and a similar small trailer.
You must have a 7 pin plug. They lied, you do need a brake controller. They are easily installed by a legitimate quality local hitch shop.
Don't tow without brakes.

4 prong to 7 prong adapter - please help
In Wisconsin at least, it is illegal NOT to have brake controls installed for your towable. It seems you will need to have the brake controller installed needing to re-wire the system to a 7 pin, and remove the 4 pin. Additionally, I have a 2018 Highlander, and it doesn't tow much worth while at a 5,000 tow capacity. So, I hope your trailer is super ultra light and I mean, WELL under 3,000 #'s.

Many states seem to follow the federal regs for brakes on trailers over 3000lbs.

My dealer's service department tried to tell be that the only way to hook up a brake controller in my Silverado was to use the provided wire harness that had to be twist-wired to the brake controller wiring. And it would only cost $200, plus the cost of the brake controller. I got a Prodigy 3 and a plug and play harness on Amazon for about $122.00. 10 minute installation. And dealers wonder why we call them stealerships.

Maximized profit for them. They don't care if it's right. Always assume they are a ripoff before you set foot in the door.

Is it safe to plug the seven pin connector to my TV while the coach is still connected to shore power?
