Can't really decide where is a good spot for this. As the owner of a Blue Ox WDH for the last 7 years I have hooked and unhooked it more times than I can count. This last weekend when unhitching I had the wrench spin around with enough speed and force I couldn't get out of the way and it split my head open. This is no fault of the Blue Ox I am sure but I am not sure what happened as it was so quick. So I am posting for 2 reasons. 1. so hopefully this doesn't happen to anyone else. 2. Anybody have an explanation what may have went wrong nd how to make sure it doesn't happen again? the pin was tough to pull but thats all i really remember.

There was too much tension on the chain. Lift the tail end of your truck higher.

Dang... OUCH... Hope you're ok! I agree with what TimfromMA said... also, I have the BlueOx as well, but lost that crappy wrench that came with it. Now i use a 1" Snap-On box/open end wrench. BUT, when i disconnect, I'm turning the coupler toward the ground... Hope this helps as well.

Agree that there was too much tension on the chains. Need to lift the tow vehicle higher before undoing the tension bars. Hope your doing ok. can't imagine how much that must have hurt.

Thanks for the concern. I'll live, 5 staples to the top of my head and a bruised ego but I'm fine. Where I'm having a hard time is I did raise the tounge and the other side came off as usual. And mine releases toward the ground also. The wrench stayed on and spun all the way around before flying off and striking me. Maybe I'm over thinking it and it had me psyched out. I towed home ball only because I didn't want to unhitch when I got home. Maybe it was just a freak accident.

I'm not sure quite what I did wrong but in my case the steel lifting handle was flung up and out and landed 2 sites over from the trailer. I was fortunate that it didn't hit anyone or anything.

Were the truck and trailer straight in line when you released the bars? If the truck was turned, the angle will put more pressure on one side than the other.
