50 Amp site

He everyone. I booked a site, that has full hookups with 50 amp service. I am such a newbie at this, I need to know if we just plug in and we're all set? I have a Roo 23IKSS. I don't want to burn anything up. I see 30 amp sites and 50 amp sites, but there were no available 30amp sites, so I booked the 50amp one. Any advise would be appreciated. I'm almost embarassed to ask, but I really don't want to damage my camper by hooking up incorrectly.

Most of the time when a site is identified as 50amp, it will also have 30 and even 20 amp service available. Just in case, I'd recommend buying a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter like this:

I actually purchased mine at Wal-Mart, but so far, I've never needed it.

SimchaSabre has you took care of.

As he already pointed out, the 50 amp site may also have the 30 amp outlet available like in the pic below, but if not you can use a 50-30 amp adapter that you can pick up at RV dealers, Wal-Mart in their RV section, Amazon.......and sometimes you can borrow them at the campground.

It's really a good idea to have this adapter irregardless, cause sometimes you may be in a place that has both a 50 and 30 amp outlet and the 30 amp outlet is bad or wore out. You can then use the adapter and plug into the 50 amp outlet if necessary. I have encountered that problem a few times myself.

Here is a youtube video that may help too:

Youroo, I believe you are suggesting that the OP use a ground/circuit tester to test the outlet for all the conditions that these outlet testers will identify......of which accurate voltage isn't one of them.....but it's still a good idea to use an outlet tester.

You should also never leave home without a surge protector. Progressive Industries are the best. Lifetime warranty included.

Progressive Industries

Good luck,
Don

X2

I would actually also buy a digital volt / ohm meter that you dedicate to the camper.
You'll need it!

If you use the proper adapter, you can easily use the circuit tester on any of the outlets, as Youroo correctly suggested.

All you need is a voltmeter and you are good to go, if you just want a plug and play type device. I have made a 30 amp one just like in this link.

30-amp RV outlet Tester

The 50 amp one is a little more complicated, having a second hot leg, but still do'able.

X2- I packed a digital VOM early on, almost as an after thought, but, it seems like I use it for something or lend it to a neighbor almost every trip out.

OMG....I am wondering if I should have just kept my lil' old pop up! I'm sure it's not as overwhelming as it seems to me right now, but geeeeezzzzeeee.....I can't keep up with the stuff I'm going to need! All these things may even be in the camper, as the owner is leaving EVERYTHING in it. We shall soon see, but I'm making a list, just in case!

You will be OK. Get the 50 to 30 amp adapter, good insurance to have just in case, as well as a 30 amp extension cord. As already mentioned I would guess the power pedestial at you site will be equipped with 50 amp service but also 30/15. The reservation just tells people that need 50 amp that it is there. As you RVing days continue you will end up having more adapters and thing am ma bobs and a dedicated rubbermaid container to put them all in.

These type testers are good but be careful, know their limitations, personally I would not use them on the 30A & 50A with adapters. We have had 3 similar ones (different brand) "blow up" on job sites. Luckily no injuries. If the outlet happens to have more than 110V no telling...... We stopped using them.

Better yet- after getting your new to you camper, make a list of everything that the owner left to you and post the list on the forum. We can alwAys give advice on how to spend your kids inheritance at Wally World and Amazon on stuff that looks cool and probably never use!

sewingcybermom, we've probably - no, definitely - have given you more ogeda than necessary. Fact of the matter, you can't plan and prepare for everything! If we try to do that, there's no fun and fodder for the campfire tales!

My Alma mater had a slogan that embodied the educational culture there and fit my way of learning and life. I think it applies here: Learn by DUing! Once you get it home, stock it up with basics (not forgetting power protection, water pressure regulator, black tank treatment, chocks, a level and some planks or equivalent to level) and begin your new adventures, learn and adapt while in the mix, and be a happy camper in your big upgrade from PUP life!

Enjoy!
