A guitar.....A campfire !!

After 40 years, I finally decided to play guitar again (2015).....and it's weird how you still know your chords after all these years.
Last summer, I brought my guitar with me and started to play around a campfire. What happened next...... our neighbors asked if they could join us, and we had such a good time. I played some of my songs, they played theirs and everyone was singing.....

I'm sure some of you folks play guitar or sing around a campfire and I thought I could share my favorite songs and perhaps some of you have your favorite ones too. Maybe that way we can have more songs to our list.

So, here is a list of five songs I love to play:

1- Margaritaville (Jimmy Buffett)
2- Brown eyed girl (Van Morrison)
3- The sound of silence (Simon & Garfunkel)
4- California dreamin' (Mamas & Papas)
5- A kind of hush (Herman's Hermits)

We are lucky to occasionally camp with folks who enjoy music. None of us are pros by any means, but we love to sit around and sing and play! I've started bringing my Ike on most trips. Some of our faves:

- Pink Houses by John Mellencamp
- Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones
- any 3-chord Beatles song (usually turns into a medley)

Maybe we will cross paths one of these days!

I can play a 'C', 'D' and 'G' chords and occasionally plink out a decent 'F'.

That means I can play 99% of country music songs.

DH plays Guitar and Mando. He plays folk, bluegrass, and some classic rock. As to his favorite, well I will have to ask him. He is good enough that he can follow along to what the lead player is playing.

Oh why can't we ever end up camped near any of you? We seem to be always near the deep bass thumpers!

My wife and I are just learning how to play the guitar. My Mom just recently gave me her guitar (we played it when we were kids and broke the strings, still had the broke strings on it LOL). My wife's Dad bought her an Ibanez years ago so I went ahead and restrung that one as well. Hopefully we can learn a few chords and strum out by the campfire this Summer!

The DW is a singer/songwriter and has been playing at the campfire for years.
She grew up camping and always did it for her family.

After we married, she got me into camping and she continued the tradition with us and the friends we camp with.

The “squeeze box” is always welcomed in "old timey” circles.

Funny how life makes a full circle!! When I was a teen and early 20's I had a "white soul" band with all the dance steps and leisure suits. Dad bought me a Martin D-35 guitar, hoping I would go country!!! Put it in the closet for 35 years. One day I happened on a bluegrass festival and was blown away by some of the talent!!! Pulled the Martin out and have been playing in jam sessions when I can find one. I have even bought a dobro and am having a ball playing that!!! Music is a tonic for the soul

I bring my ukuleles. My two go-to ukes for camping are an Outdoor Ukulele tenor made of composite polycarbonate and a Martin OXK soprano make of high pressure laminate. Both are pretty worry-free.

I like to play old movie songs - Smile, As Time Goes By, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. 1970's folk rock - Joni Mitchell, Carpenters, Led Zeppelin. Current favorites are Celtic hornpipes and fugues arranged for ukulele.

No pics. Mine are in the cases ready to be loaded for a two week trip from here in Okeechobee, Florida to Fredericksburg, Virginia starting tomorrow. My Mom is having a 90th birthday party and it always required that I do a few songs for her. Keep playing and making wonderful music!!!!!!

Oh my goodness. These are all new songs to us. We're still singing "Found a Peanut" and "Dinah won't you Blow your Horn". We're still listening to Glen Miller and the Mills Brothers. Where has time gone?
