A hard-learned hint to any slide-out owner

This seems too obvious, but if you have a unit with slides, remember when bringing your slides in for any reason to check underneath!! My dealer's technician had to do some service on the double slideout interior trim of my 401-2b, pressed the slides switch and watched as the two bedrrom slides retracted first. Unfortunately my son's bicycle was under one of them. It wasn't until a neighbour noticed the metal skirt buckling and bending that he realized what he was doing. Sob!!!! So the tip is, check before you draw your slides in.

Good advice!

Even though I'm new to a TT, I'm trying to get up to speed on as much as I can for the upcoming season and new experiences.
After reading of several mishaps, I've been trying to train myself to ALWAYS do a walk around before 'hitting the button'.

Another one of those things you don't think about until it happens. Thanks for the advice.

Smile Another Slide tip

Before your first use of your slide in the spring crawl under it with a car of spray lube and a flat screwdriver.
Not to tighten stuff but to get rid of any accumulater "stuff" on and around the slides.
Follow this with a good spraying of lube for a smooth operation right away.

I do the same in the fall before winter.

Can't hurt and gives you achance to catch other problems under and out of sight before they become weekend enders.

Happy Camping

Don't forget to make sure all drawers and cupboard doors are closed inside also. On our first or second trailer, with a slideout, we caught a door. I can't remember which trailer it was. Bear would know.

It was the 30 ft Westport with a rear kitchen. It was the pantry door. Pulled the slide in and ripped it right off the hinges.

I've been wondering about lubing the slideout mechanisims too... do you use any particular spray lube?

When I had a 36' Class A, I got in a rush to bring the large slide in. I had typically checked everything in the past.

While it was sliding it, it slowed down, and something was making a noise. I instantly stopped and looked to find out what the problem was. Turns out the recently purchased gallon of car washing fluid was getting crushed between the slide and the cabinet. This was on the far side of slide, out of my view from where the switch was.

I had to drive the slide back out to extract the jug of washing fluid. It was completely distorted, and I can't believe it didn't burst inside my RV!

But alas, that RV has been sold, and my new TT has no slides, so no longer an issue. Hopefully the rest of ya will learn from our mistakes!

Thanks, I usually find out what type of lube it is (silicone, lithium grease, etc) and buy the 'non-RV' version of the same; generally I find that anything aimed at the RV market is a repackaged household or automotive product and vastly over-priced. (eg: rubber-roof cleaners, black streak remover.) But I'll check it out, thanks again.
