Advice on traveling from AR to SD...

We are leaving Sunday to travel from Arkansas (home) to Rapid City, SD. Our original route took us through Missouri, however, due to the flooding and road closures, we are detouring through Iowa on I-35 and up to MN to pick up I-90.

I'm wondering if anyone has been through this area recently and what the increased traffic is like due to detours?

Any other time, we would postpone our trip, however, this is for a business obligation and we have to be in SD no later than Thursday. <sigh>

I've checked all the 511 websites for the states we are traveling through, but my biggest anxiety is what slowdowns we may encounter.

I'm still a virgin hauler of my little coach with less than 7000 miles under my belt, and don't want sleepless boondocking nights along the way. Anyone have any information? Thanks in advance.

I'm in Georgia now but have family in Lincoln and Sioux Falls (we used to live in Sioux Falls (.

I'd recommend you stay out of I-29 south of Omaha. However, North is fine. So, looking at what might be your probable route I'd go through KC them up I-35 to Des Moines and then over on I-80 to Omaha and I- 29 and from there up to Sioux Falls and over to RC on 90.

Thank you 007matman! I appreciate your time in sharing.

I have re-checked this morning and think we will head west on 80 from Des Moines as you suggested. Things appear to be A-okay and open that way, and we'll keep our eye on the weather for any changes along the way.

Thanks! We hope to!

We are staying at the Black Hills KOA in Rapid City. I hope to take an excursion to see some of the sights. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate.

My favorite road out there (if you're into that kind of thing) is through Spearfish Canyon. If you haven't been it's well worth it. I hear Custer is beautiful too.. more tourists though.

Too bad it is for business...there are a bunch of spectacular things to see all within a few hours drive or less. My faves:
Custer STATE park ...both the wildlife loop and the northern tunnel loop.
Badlands Nat. Scenic Drive
Devils Tower (WY)
Mount Rushmore
Vanguard Missile Silo (Exit 116) & Wall Drug
Deadwood

See what you can..as soon as you can! Have fun...

Excellent suggestions. Don't forget to drive down over the Pigtail Bridges after visiting Mount Rushmore. The road leads down to Custer State Park. There are maps in the area that show where this is. Do not try to pull a trailer or drive a motor home down there as you must drive though a narrow, low-clearance tunnel and there is no room.

Drive safe and watch out for spring snow storms in Black Hills/Rapid City area.

Thanks to all of you. We arrived in Rapid City this afternoon. We took the route from KC to Des Moines, then I-80 west to I-29 N. It was a smooth trip. Was happy to see the truck traffic continue W on 80 when we got to I-29.

We've decided to extend our trip several days as the weather is wet, cold, and rainy/snowy in the forecast the next two days. We'll see some sites and head back the middle of next week.

Thanks again!

If I was going back to Arkansas, maybe try running highway 2 from Alliance, Neb over to Grand Island, Neb. Pretty drive.
