Amateur Radio Field Day - You going?

As it turns out 2016 Field Day lands smack in the middle of a little camping trip we have planned.

I guess I'll drag the HF radio along and see if anybody can hear me on a couple of different antennas. We'll be a 1B GA.

Haven't done a field day in years... might have to make it a habit.

Anybody else on the air for Field Day?

It won't do MACH 2, but I can get a sandwich and take a pee.

Maybe I can hear you Friday night, I have dipoles cut for 10-15-20-40m. What time?

A new tradition perhaps - camping on Field Day weekend

NortherLee is a HAM

I'll be operating as N7RV. Working QRP while trying to recover my former CW skills. For this event the transceiver is Yaesu FT-817nd, ant is Butternut vertical, and most likely the key will be a Kent hand key. Will be picking up our new-to-us Sunseeker 2700DS this coming Monday. Will be combining the shake-down cruise with next weekend's Field Day event.

I'll be back from a 4 day camping trip in time for field day. I've kind of backed off on the activity, old age kicking in. I belong to 2 local clubs so I will visit each one and give some operators a little break but I don't expect to do an all nighter like have done in the past. One club will be 4A operating on battery power only and the other will be plugged into the wall. It seems like there always a little rain shower to slow things down a bit. Both clubs will operate out in open areas with tents and gazebos for protection. We had one club member work CW and had over 500 contacts last year. One club will be W4TIY 4A GA in Paulding County GA and the other will be W4FWD 4? GA in Carroll County GA. Good luck since propagation sucks although I understand the 6M contest last week was pretty good (in some areas).
9pm EDT for the Frog Net Wade.

OK thanks for the time. I'm not going to kill myself doing this, I'm just going to play with it off and on all day. Which has been my usual FD effort for the last 20 years...

I support my local club, but I rarely get to go to Field Day because I work weekends a lot. It's a lot of fun, and I enjoy making contacts in the evenings.

Wow.. you must be an old timer at Ham radio.. with a call of N7RV.. I thought I was an old timer with W7ITK.. started in 1957 at the age of 14.
Got new Rockwood 2506S on order. Should come in coming week. Happy Camping..!

clintbonnie73:
While my interest in radio electronics has been lifelong, I have been a licensed HAM only since February, 1994. N7RV is a vanity call which I acquired in August, 2000, after having formerly been assigned AB7HI (January, 1995). I was relatively content being AB7HI with the exception that a lot of folks I was communicating with (in CW) seemed confused by it. The original purveyor of N7RV released it in exchange for vanity call W7SS. And like most folks, time spent pursuing amateur radio waxes and wanes in no discernible pattern.

tinkerreknit:
Yes indeed, N7RV blends well with RVing, but this was simply an unplanned coincidence. My experience has been that N7RV is more readily recognized in CW than was AB7HI.

My family was living in Dallas-Paulding, Georgia, during the civil war. I've read books about "The Battle of New Hope Church."

Take care all...

I'm not a native Georgian, I've lived here for 20 years now. A lot of Civil War history around here. New Hope is an unincorporated community about 5 miles north of Dallas (most noted for a Delta plane crash site a little over 20 years ago) Pickett's Mill battlefield is just north of New Hope, and there is Kennesaw Mountain, an import feature in the battles.

Side note: Not long after we moved here we were at Kennesaw Mountain and there were doing a war enactment of an encampment, everyone had Union uniforms on. I went up to a park ranger and said "I'm sure glad the reinforcements got here as I have been catching a little grief about being a northerner, his answer was just remind them who won the war.

Also, in Kennesaw there is a Civil War museum with a locomotive in the great locomotive chase.

Anyone interested in Civil War history should see a sobering Civil War memorial at the Andersonville Civil War Prison Camp, a national park now.

Hmmm, I will be camping at Road America next weekend for the Indy Car Race, I don't have any antenna for the new camper yet, but I may have time to rig up a dipole! At least I'll bring my HT.
