Amicalola State Park In Ga.
Whew, just got back from Amicalola Falls State Park in north Ga. Tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi, some 750 feet. Beautiful, really breathtaking. Great campsites. If any of you go there and are towing a camper in the weight range of a SV 291 (around 6K loaded) with a Chev Z 71 with a 5.3 litre engine listen up. The check in is at the top of the mountain. It is a little over a mile up the mountain to get to the check in. The slope is a TWENTY FIVE PERCENT GRADE almost all the way up the mountain. God is it steep. I put the truck in 4 wheel low to get up the mountain. No Problem. I talked to a guy who had a similar TT and TV and he went up in 2 wheel drive low. Almost burned up his tranmission. Going down the mountain without the TT attached I had the truck in 1st gear 2 wheel drive and had to keep on the brakes to stay within the speed limit of 15 MPH. After we broke camp and headed home I descended the mountain in 4 wheel low and did a steady 17 mph all the way down with only minimal use of the brakes. There is a turnout half way up and during our time there we saw some poor sap pulled over in the turnout with smoke boiling out from under the truck. Burned the tranny is what I surmised. Just a word of advice if you ever go there, but it is just drop dead gorgeous up there and the town of Dahlonega, 17 miles away, has really great wine shops and a chocolate shop run by a guy who is rated in the top ten in the world, .....really.
