Anode Rod Out
Is it good or bad to not install the anode rod if w/h is not being used .

I would at least start it or stuff a paper towel in the hole to keep unwanted intruders. (bugs, spiders, etc)

There is no harm in leaving it out if you want, but you should plug the hole to keep bugs out of it.

Does anyone know if there is any danger of the threads of the tank itself rusting over the winter with leaving it out?

Not much and what little will be there can be wire brushed out. Wet a paper towel with WD40 and just wipe the threads when you take the anode out if you're worried.

I have left it out a couple years back.
I always take a piece of screen fabric over lapping the compartment door hole for the water heater and then install the door to hold the screen in place.
I now start the rod, I do not tighten it up.
Before when leaving the rod out the threads would rust.

Any reason not to clean and install for next year? I cleaned the threads, replaced the tape and tighten the rod back in; thoughts?

I actually reinstall it permanently.
That way it is ready to go in the spring (or in February for the Baton Rouge Rally). Drain the Pink, hook up at the first campsite and flush out the lines for 15 minutes. Then turn the valves and you are good to go.

Just did mine that way ten minutes ago, mduff. That way, it's one less thing to tend to in the spring, and, no spiders or other bugs setting up home inside the tank. Too, I like the idea of having the Teflon tape engaging the tank's threads during the long layover.
