Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park is a pretty good place. It's pretty close to B-ham as well.

Oak Mountain State Park is our favorite one, just south of Birmingham in Pelham off of I65. Beautiful park with a nice golf course, small lakes to fish and kayak along with some great hiking and Mtn biking. Close to lots of restaurants and shopping.

Birmingham Campground

Just left Birmingham area after spending 4 months there and personally inspected all campgrounds in 20 mile radius. We wanted most of the comforts of home. I.e. clean bathrooms, safe area, full sewer hookup and wifi. Found Birmingham Southcampground met most of our needs. Just off I65 in Pelham. Only negative was no TV cable but can get a few local channels with just antenna.

X2 on Tannehill State Park. Nice with plenty full hookups. No cable tv, several local channels. Off I59/20 west side of BHam. They do not take reservations, but will give out if they have available sites. Nice folks there. Stay there at least once a year on way to LA. Have heard good things about Cullman cg noth of BHam on I 65, they do take reservations.

Oak Mountain

2X and 3X. Stayed at Oak Mountain last June. Great place. Golf, Lake etc nearby. Call now to see if you can get a spot. Just a bit out of Birmingham.
Don't try to find a tour of the city, there is none. Go to the visitors center, they will give all sorts of info. Suggest dinner in Avondale, in particular, "Melt". Lots of dining and entertainment opportunities in that area. Try to see the Ironworks and a night time Ghost Walk is also very interesting. The downtown entertainment district, Palace Theater, Lyric etc is experiencing a renaissance.
LMK if you plan on visiting Montgomery as well.
Happy Trails, Bob

We stayed at oak mountain once and was a nice state park. No concrete and a lot of campfires with great walking trails. If you are looking for more of a campground with cable, wifi, etc the best is Birmingham south. Just deepends on what you want. Good luck!!!

Yes there is a wonderful campground. The name of it is Birmingham South Campground. 18 miles south of Downtown Birmingham, Al. Less than 1 mile west of I-65 at exit 242 in Pelham, AL. 800.772.8832.

It is very clean, conveniently located and has the nicest people.

Oak Mountain State Park is a nice park, but the campground needs upgrading badly. We are locals and frequent the park often and have camped in our TT twice in the campground. No wi-fi and AT&T service is spotty due to all the trees and mountains. If you are into nature you will be OK with that, but if you don't care about nature and just want a place to park your rig and have free wi-fi and cable, you can camp at the Hoover RV park at the Hoover Met. It's basically a large parking lot with a few sparse trees here and there, but is in a convenient location. My sister stayed in this campground for a couple of months after they purchased their motorhome and they were happy with it. Personally, we like nature and prefer a state park type site, but different strokes for different folks. If you'd rather be close to shopping, Hoover RV Park is a good choice.

Tannehill is great for all. Kids love it as it is great place for them to roam. They have trade days the third weekend of the month from March thru November. Park always starts to fill up the 2nd weekend in preparation for this. We just stayed there for 5 days with the grandson and he loved it. He is 5. Check their website for activities. They usually have a lot going on spring and summer.

Any decent RV parks around Birmingham, AL area?

Thanks to all for your inputs. An update for those reading this,,,Hoover is closed until 1 June 2017 for major updates and road logistics in conjunction with the Sports Complex that is close them.
I am going to stay at the Birmingham South site for the 4 days that I am in the area visiting wife's family members before heading for NOLA for some more fun.
