Rumor has it folks are taking the barricades down. The government can't close something that is owned by the people.

So someone seems to think that if you come to a do-not-enter area in a normal open park (perhaps for safety reasons) that it's ok to just ignore the sign and go in because "the people own it"? What nonsense. That will get you arrested or escorted out.

In this case, there may be no one "on salary" to enforce the closure, or they may still get arrested. I hope so.

They can out up a sign that says enter at your own risk, no staff on duty.

What did your congressman tell you? Mine is one of the ones helping to cause this problem & his response was; "Thank you for taking the time to share your comments. Please know that your views are important to me, and I will provide a comprehensive response as soon as possible.".

Lets hope it is open for you soon.

I don't want to go political. From top to bottom, both sides of the fence, there are problems. At a time like this it shouldn't matter who you voted for, it should bring us all together as a country and make sure it doesn't happen again.

Yellowstone is not close to the War Memorial in Washington, DC. Two different animals.

Veterans are being allowed to visit only because if it weren't for them, the Memorial wouldn't be there. Not quite the same with Yellowstone or other parks.

You are right, Old Coot. There are all sorts of government facilities that belong to all of us but are not open to the public any time we want to go in. Military bases come to mind. And all sorts of government offices and facilities that cannot function with tourists parading through. The list goes on and on. It's too bad that national parks are temporarily closed, but I would not recommend for anyone to force their way in.

401 national park units across the system were closed with an exception for First Amendment activities on the National Mall and the Honor Flights fall into that category. That's according to Jon Jarvis, director of the National Park Service.

I'm not making a political statement here. Just commenting on a camping issue involving the idea of letting people go into national parks that are not staffed: That would probably be no problem if all campers were as responsible as the folks on this forum, but I'm afraid our great national parks would be destroyed by some of the folks I've seen in campgrounds.

Without the park rangers and other personnel available, you'd have people driving like maniacs, setting up hunting camps, throwing trash out their windows and setting the place on fire, not to mention trying to hand-feed wild bears.

I would rather have the parks protected by being closed for a few days, as opposed to having them damaged by irresponsible visitors.

i don't necessarily disagree with you. I ask the question because for a brief time there was a story on Yahoo saying that people were taking down the barricades at Yellowstone. But the story had since been removed. I apologize for using the the words "I hope so" in my post.

Barricades were pushed aside at the Roosevelt Arch and it looks like one sign was run over with a vehicle. Probably nothing more than a protest. The actual entrance to the park (where you pay to enter) is farther down the road.

There is snow in Yellowstone and many of the campgrounds are already closed. If the park has suspended snow removal the roads will be quickly impassable anyway.

We are all pawns in a political game. The best any of us can do is to send emails expressing our dissatisfaction with the government shutdown. I've already sent emails to my congressman and both senators from MO stating my feelings and accusing them of acting like grade school children.
