I discussed the idea with the wifey, and she has concern's about tracking tar/oil off the rap and into the house. Any issues with that?

I have not had any, the only issue I have had is the small asphalt pieces getting stuck in the sole of my shoe and the kids and it comes off in the house. Hasn't been a big deal for the past 6 years.

That would be like any base product. The hotter the day you roll recycled asphalt, the better it will compact. The more it's compacted, the less likely you are to pick up something up on your shoes. Don't spray it with diesel.

Recycled road

I got the recycle put down over an existing gravel base. My recycle is 8 inches deep and my contractor used his CAT driving over it multiple times to pack it down. For the first two years I sprayed it with a high quality drive way sealant. It seems to be working well. Time will tell, I am estimating a 2-3 year application cycle.

I have heard about RAP. But I would like to know if the quality suffers if we use recycled asphalt or asphalt millings on pavements with heavy traffic?

No difference in quality of the final product. Important part is the rolling or compaction of the asphalt when it's put down.

I might recommend flex base, or also called crushed concrete. The flex base tends to set up after a rain. The asphalt road base may get sticky in the summer time. Just my thoughts, enjoy the new unit.

Agree with Ifightfire; flex base is also called crusher run in some locales. I mentioned it in my first post. Spread it out, wet it down and roll it and it gets like concrete. Cheap, too.

How long will this "ink pad" phenomena continue? Will it stop?

No, I personally did not used recycled asphalt before. I was planning to pave my driveway, so I contacted pavers from long island, who told me that, first they will visit the place and then will decide which material to choose. It is important to select right material as material decides the durability of the driveway.

We used recycled asphalt on a long driveway overtop crushed gravel. It hardened up nicely but we always had tiny bits of asphalt sitting on top that tracked into the house for months. It was considerably less cost than a proper asphalt job and looked ok.
