My 550 mile day is to get to Levelland, Texas. (Probably shouldn't say this but free camping and free water and elec. hook up). Makes for a tuff day driving. Wayne

I just check the route west. From were I live to the next province is 1276 mi or 25 hr 51 min. That is why I plan to only travel 300 to 350 miles per day.

We are in the "tank of gas" group. Since I fuel at the 1/2 tank mark that works out to about 2 hours; fuel; two hours (max) or less (normally) to campground.

So, 3.5 to 4 hours at 55 MPH (ave) or 200-225 miles a day.
When driving cross country, we try to spend a one or two stationary days at a campground every three driving days.

We plan those stationary days at places that have sights we want to see.
We think the journey should be as much fun as the destination.

I plan on arriving NO LATER than 3 PM and we like to depart between 9 and 9:30. Arriving at campgrounds in the dark is a recipe for disaster sooner or later.

Tree branches actually reach out to grab your camper's roof in the dark when no one can see them come to life.

I fall into the "iron butt" category. On my motorcycle when I am by myself I will put around 900-1000 miles behind me per day. With the DW wife on the back only about 500-550.

When towing the camper we will do about 700-750 miles per day. I could go further but the DW and DD can't take any more windshield time than that. We recently drove from NW Ohio to The Grand Tetons in a 2 days and 4 hours (4 hours Friday night to get past Chicago in the evening and then arrived about 6:00 PM on Sunday).

On a trip last year pulling my trailer with a Suburban 1500, we made initial plans to drive from Twin Falls, ID to Primm, NV. which is 540 miles, when we arrived in Primm we didn't feel tired or fatigued, so we kept going to Victorville, CA. At that time we were ready to stop, we were driving 65 mph. This ended up being 685 miles. We had 3 kids with us and were heading to Disneyland, the kids were good about traveling that distance because they were excited to get there.

Normally I wouldn't plan that distance, the 550 to 600 miles is pretty good for us.

With my current tow vehicle the truck handles the drive much better, I don't feel near so tired when I get to the destination. I haven't traveled as far yet, but I think 600 miles would be no problem for me.

When I plan on breaking up the trip into two legs for example, I prefer to leave later in the afternoon, parking lot camp at a truck stop, then finish trip the next day, this leaves an average of about 400 miles a day.

In our youth the DW and I once drove about 1200 straight to get down to Florida, left Cleveland about 6pm and drove thru the nite. We made it in just within our 24 hour goal. Problem was, I spent the next three days dead to the world. Was not worth it and after that we would lay over in Dalton. Last time doing that same stretch took 4 days.

We try to limit our travel to 400-450 miles a day. With stops for us that works out to about 9 + hours. We recently did a 600 miler and was wiped out the next day, should have pulled off for a few hours sleep would have saved the next day.

I agree and think that there is a fine balance between just the right amount of miles for you and overdoing it. When we did 800 miles with our 4 kids (initially planning to split it to 2 days but thought let's make up a day) and got to our destination in the am, the next day we were so tired that we just had to recuperate and it blew away any advantage we got from theoretically getting there a day earlier.

We just finished a 6000 mile trip and found that long driving days should be maxed at 350 miles give or take. With stops, hills etc it was a good 8-9 hours and still left time for everyone to unwind and enjoy the next days activities.

When I came to the States I had been used to regular non-stop journeys from the UK to Spain, Italy, Austria, etc., so I can just keep going if I have to, but I prefer the 'tank of gas' way. My wife and I get around 10 weeks off in the summer so usually there is no need to rush anywhere. BUT sometimes when you are prebooked and you've had a hold up, then it's necessary to cover the miles.
A good guide for me is to watch the wifes legs, and when these start to twitch and jump around - it's time to find a stop!!!
If you can't wake up with a smile on your face, go to bed with a coat hanger in your mouth!!

Except for the day we're headed home into familiar territory, we try to keep our travel days to less than 200 miles. We burn less gas per day than trying to do 400 miles, and it's more relaxing. Isn't that the objective of RVing?

We're at an age where travelling gently though intereting places is why we're RVers. When we relocated across country in the 1970's (WA to Tidewater VA and then back again three years later) we didn't think much of doing 500 miles a day. Lookng back and doing the math, that's 8 hours averaging over 50 mph with gas, pee and meal stops. How did we do that with four kids under 10?

The mind boggles.
