Average miles per day

Generally, what do people average in miles traveled per day on a long trip. This will be our first long trip. I will be driving from Raleigh, NC to Spearfish, SD. I have been driving the TT to just local spots, and usually travel between 60 & 65 on the highway.

I was thinking we could do around 400 miles or more a day. Then check in to a CG for the night. Does this sound reasonable?

It depends how long you are comfortable driving. 400 miles a day is about 8 hours with stops.

I'm curious too. Planning a trip to Yellowstone next year. Some in our group think 500+ per day is fine. Others think 400 should be the max.

Those of you who have experience with long distance trips could really shine some light on this. Thanks.

Going to San Antonio, from Loveland, Co., Have hard first day, about 550 miles. makes the second day alot easier. I think if your not in a hurry, 300-400 is plenty.

For us 350 to 400 is all we can stand in a day.

Again it's what you are comfortable doing. I do a lot of driving for work. I've done many 300-500+ mile days. I have also done 500+ mile days with the camper. When the weather is nice it's not too bad. When the weather isn't nice it is tiring.

I tend to think of traveling in terms of time on the road rather than distance. I shoot for getting to the next campground around check-in time, usually about 2 PM, so I have time to set up, check out the campground, go gas up the truck, etc. Much more relaxing for me but, then again, I'm not on any kind of schedule. I usually average about 350 per day.

Anywhere from 200 to 350 is enough for me. Once, when pressed we did almost 750, with DW doing 250, to get home ahead of a winter storm.

I like to stay off the interstates and take time to sightsee and explore. We seldom plan more than a day at a time. Old buildings, history, parks, the local people, garage sales... half the fun of traveling is enjoying the things along the way. We start talking about where we are going to stay around 2 or 3.

We used to go to Colorado quite a bit, and would make the trip down non-stop, about 1300 miles. The main reason was we didn't have air-conditioning in the old days, and going across Nebraska in the cool of the night was actually pretty neat. No one on the roads but semis, and at night they seem a lot more polite!
But that was when we were young and full of piss and vinegar! Now, we limit it to 500 miles or less.

We've done 550 miles a couple of different times headed out to Colorado but we were extremely tired at the end of those days. 500 miles is pretty doable for us but we don't stop much; and travel at about 60 mph. 500 miles is 9 to 10 hours for us.

After blowing a tire, we stay 55-60, and we travel for pleasure and relaxation.

Therefore, allowing for a low stress breakdown and setup, we find 6 hours of driving is an upper end drive time.

No, we're not retired yet, but it is supposed to be relaxing - we just don't go as far.
Yes, we are within sight of retirement, so we also don't have the same energy we did 30 years ago....

This translates into about 300-350 miles per day.
Or, 4, 6, 8 inches on the map depending upon the scale the Mrs. is using

We are planning our trip west in Oct. We will average about 300 to 350 miles per day. Some days will be shorter. We base our day on where the next CG will be open. Do not like wally world camping. I try to stop every 2hr. to get out of the TV and walk.

We target 400 miles a day and look for places to camp beyond that. Sometimes we go as far as 450 miles. We have also had 500 + days and we have had 350 days. But for us the travel is apart of the trip. We have measured average miles per hour and for us it is about 50 mph with the fuel and food stops. So, 400 miles equals 8 hours and 500 miles is 10 hours. If you start at 7 am you get to your distination at 7 pm, there is just time for dinner and not much else.

We also find that if we increase our speed to increase the 50 mph average, we have much more trailer damage from road bounce.

another reason 350 miles a day works for us is that is approximately how much we can get on a tank full. We will fill up before setting up camp for the nite and we are ready to go for the whole day on the previous day's fill up. so our routine is to find cheap gas with gas buddy and then find a CS within 20 or 30 miles.

I drive 160 miles a day to and from work so to drive 500 miles to me is nothing, but what makes the difference is the traffic and the road conditions, and it depends on your mine set.

One more here who plans for 400 mile legs. I usually plan campground stops using Google Maps, and anything in between is fair game. This leaves plenty of time to set up when we get there, get gas, cook dinner, hit the pool, etc.

Obviously you all live in little states LOL.. From where I live, it takes me 300 MILES to get to central Texas LOL. Another 300 or so to get OUT of texas. I Like driving in new areas so for me I'm comfortable doing 500 MILES or 12hr drives obviously with stops. That was BEFORE having a TODDLER. She can't stand to be in the Baby Seat for long so we plan lots of rest stops.

I can see where people do longer days and more miles when not retired. Vacation is precious and who wants to spend any more days than necessary on the road. But, now that we are retired, we tend to do shorter days. We try not to over plan.

Our trips to Myrtle Beach are 512 miles each way. I usually leave around 10:00 PM on Friday night, drive about half the distance, roll into the Walmart parking lot for a snooze of about 90 to 120 minutes. Get back up and drive the second half. I find I'm not so worn out doing it that way instead of one long drive. The ride back home is broken up with a stop at a Cracker Barrel for a meal, we stay about 2 hours as well.

That must be nice Retirement. Sadly I'm still about 30yrs away from that LOL. WOW that sounds LONG!! But I agree, if I had a lot of time off we would do just that.
