LED's are susceptible to high and low voltage. I suspect it is more a problem with quality control of the manufacturer. The LED's can be sorted, called binning, by brightness, color, or voltage. Most times they are only binned by brightness. I used to work in sales for a major manufacturer of LED message signs for highway use. They only used binned LED's for brightness and had to pay a premium for those. For a product like the strip lights binned LED's for any of the three reasons would not normally be used.
Good and cheap don't go together. So, I guess it is "stuff happens" and hope you have better results. One or two failing I would say would be about normal but have a lot of them fail may mean poor quality.
