Baby proofing screen door
This season my daughter will be almost 2 yrs old and was wondering what anyone has done to try and lock the screen door so they don't fall out. Baby gate won't work in our doorway either.

If you have a big folding grab handle, it's easy:

I can't turn a wrench, but I can bend the rules real nice.
It works decent for dogs, too. But I worry about them getting their foot caught in the 1" or so that the door does open.

Duct tape. But ya gotta make sure you leave air holes when you tape them up.
Took me two kids to figure that out.

Holy crap, I have never thought of that and my littlest one is now 2 1/2. My wife and I were freaking out all season last year because of this.. she'd love to put her face on the screen and push on it.

Put a sheet of Lexan on the lower portion and a plain old hook and eye on the screen door. Flipping the outside hand rail is the cheapest and easiest. Good thinking Doug.

For the screen, I was nervous that my son was going to push it out (and he started to).
For that, we just cut Plexiglass and out that in the screen area. It's not breathabke but is nice for keeping some A/C and heat in.

When our sons were young I picked up a small barrel latch. I screwed to latch to the inside of the screen door near the sliding opening in the screen door. When latched the barrel of the latch caught on the door frame. You could slide the latch to open the door and then when out put your hand through the sliding opening to lock the latch. Worked great for two you boys.. and a dog.

I put mine outside. Works the same only different.
Pic is fuzzy, but you can make out the knob on the sliding latch just outside the door.

Don't have a picture but we put an old fashioned small screen door hook like we used when the kids were little...........

Handle ideal worked great. Now just need to get a storm door protector for the lower screen. Wife shot down the lexan option.

If you use lexan for the lower half of the door, You can cut it to fit the frame instead of the screen and use velcro to hold it to the inside of the door. It's easily removed once the kids are old enough to open an additional latching mechanism. Put a second layer on the outside with full length velcro strips on both pieces for winter use and you've built a double pane window using a dead air gap for insulation.

Or forget the Velcro and cut the plastic to fit the inside grooves on the door. Slide up, for the top, down for the bottom. Hold in place with screen spline.

I used a screen door dog guard turned vertically on our old hybrid trailer. It was a metal lattice with flanges on either end for attaching to a screen door. I purchased it at Menards. They came in either a black or white finish.
Unfortunately our screen door in our new Rockwood Mini lite 2304KS is too narrow to accomidate one. I'm hoping that our 2 little dogs don't tear the screen.
