Backing in to tight spots (pics)

Note by site team: The following posts have been moved to their own thread so as to not further hijack the thread they were originally posted in

I find it absolutely amazing how many can't seem to back up a trailer by themselves.

I've been doing it since I was eight years old...

I'm 58 1/2 now...never once hit a thing!

Of course, now I'm all worried about my neighbors at the storage lot!

I've tucked it in this tight spot twice since I moved here all by my lonesome...

That is about as tight as my spot at my old house in Denver before the wind blew my side fence down.

Decided not to replace most of the fence so that I could put the slides out.

I think that if I were in the position of having to get a new paint job on my 5'ver...I'd have all of the decals removed and go plain...or maybe have some custom logos put on it.

I'd definately get rid of those swirlies!

You do know you can edit your posts for a period of time (maybe a half hour) and not have to create a second post apologizing.

In this case... swirlies = graphics.
Vanilla = plain, no graphics.

For the record...

Just thought I'd point out that there were a couple of other posts by others before me that kind of started this tight spot conversation that didn't come here.

Don't want people thinking I was trying to hijack that topic thread...

Otherwise...

Show us your tight spots!

In my photo above, the RV's on either side of mine appear much farther away than they really are (kinda like passenger side mirrors).

There is about 2 1/2 feet between each RV.

I park mine on the side of my house with 1/2 the trailer past the front of the house. The spot it’s self is not very tight. It’s the surroundings that are. Having to navigate the front of the truck between neighbors cars and such.

havjng to nearly jackknife the trailer to get it there makes it diffficult considering the gutter of the house and the trailer need to be a couple inches away. So I can open the slide just enough to get to the fridge and keep it out of the Nieghbor bushes.

Wish I had as much room as you guys. I have a narrow gate I need to navigate through doing a 90° turn off of our street. It's so narrow I have to fold in my mirrors of my truck to make it through.

I would love having 2 1/2 feet on each side!!

I don't consider any of the pictures on this thread particularly tight.

I have a 1/2 acre to back my camper in from the highway. I’m pouring a ten foot wide concrete pad tomorrow to back the camper on. The camper is 8 feet wide so I should be able to hit the pad.

What you (and many people on the forum) continually forget is that a lot of RVing skills aren't something all of us have past experience in.

The first time I ever backed a trailer was when I was 30 years old. That experience was fantastic... "trailer training" for LL Bean. 10 guys standing around outside of a van telling me to turn the wheel one way or another while I attempted to back a kayak trailer into a parking spot.

After that, my experience extended to 1-4 weekends a month, we would be responsible for hitching up and driving down a walking path to the lake side in the morning. At the end of the day, we would drive back up to our parking spot. About 1/2 of the time, I was the driver. About 3/4 of the time I was the driver, we would sort of get it close, unhitch and roll it by hand into its spot.

And then I bought a pop-up when I was 31 and used it 8 times that summer. Almost always with my wife helping to guide me.

And then I got my first fifth wheel at 32. Now 38 1/2, I've been doing it for a while. BUT to this day, I almost always have had my wife help me with parking. She just sees it better than I do.

I've had to park without her a couple of times and I get it done every time, but it's a painful process.

That experience was WAY harder than backing up a long 5th wheel. Short wheel base trailers are the hardest. I have a short wheel base utility trailer that's a bear to get it to go where I want it. Just look away for a second and it is all haywire. On my F-150, I have trailer backup assist which I never use unless I want to back up my utility trailer in a straight line. The steering wheel on the truck goes crazy making small corrections while doing it.
