Bad Day at the Campground

Spent two nights near Grandfather Mountain, NC this past weekend. We had our 5th wheel and our daughter had her tow behind. When we started to pack up and leave Sunday afternoon, we discovered that someone had stolen the slide in hitch from the back of her tow vehicle!

Now what? 200 miles from home and no hitch. We ended up going to Advance Auto and purchased a 2" hitch, 2 5/16" ball, and locking pin. No other choice. She had a slow, careful ride home with no load equalizing hitch or sway bar. Fortunately she has a big, heavy, tow vehicle.

Some low life person out there somewhere. We are not sure if the bad deed occurred at the campground, or in the town of Boone, as she did made 2 trips into town. Her replacement hitch will have a locking pin on it. I guess it is too easy to trust people. Sure hope it was not another camper!

I locked mine for that very reason, mainly if mine went away I'd be stuck and what if I couldn't find even a basic 2 5/16 setup?

Course now I'm thinking how to lock my 5er hitch down. Hmmmmmm

Sorry to hear it, people just suck.

Unless it was a very expensive WDH, I doubt it would make the deductible, or just barely. My WDH was about $500, which is usually the lowest deductible. Many people go with $1000.

That's why I never take mine off and have a locking pin. Some one stole a friends while he was parked at work. I put my other parts away and lock them up also, no matter where you go some one will affect you in a negative way. Insurance probably wouldn't be worth talking to unless you have one of those really expensive hitches, most have a $250 to $500 deductible. Sorry to hear this hope it didn't ruin your trip.

We had a hitch head stolen from the side of the garage last summer. It had laid there for 6 yrs and we looked at it one day anticipating moving the racecar trailer that weekend and that Sat. we backed up to the trailer and NO HITCH HEAD. Some low life SOB stole the whole thing. Luckily the bars and 2 sway controls were in locked in the trailer.

My hitch uses 4 hitch pins to attach it to the bed rails.

One pin is drilled bigger where the clip pin goes for a small padlock.

My dad use to pick on me and my brother for having the locking hitch pins, that was until he was on a trip in his MH and had a toad. He stopped to pick something up, got back on the road and people started waving him down, blowing their horns at him so he pulled over to find the pin missing and the back of his MH and the front of him truck smashed in . Now guess who has a locking pin

I lock the legs, but they could still get the hitch plate. I may just have to rework the hitch plate pivot pin to accept a padlock. One minor advantage with the tonneau cover, "Out of sight, out of mind" I hope.

With the price of propane going up steady watch your tanks they are going to be a target. Best part most wouldn't notice till they went to have one filled. Take one out from under the shroud and turn the selector to the tank that's still there and that person will never know. Oh must clarify something I've been in Law enforcement for 24 yrs and have learned to think like them. The old statement No body says you have to be smart to be a criminal isn't totally true, the ones that get caught this applies to.

Sorry to hear some scum suckin' pig did that to your daughter.

I'm not a trusting person, and even if I do trust, I verify.

I see people in RV parks all the time with their expensive WD bars laying under the tongue of their TTs. Not us! When we unhooked DH would put all the pieces in the back of his truck. We have a locking Tonneau cover on the truck bed. Yes, that only keeps the honest man honest but slows down the above mentioned scum sucker.

His receiver locks on to his truck.

Good idea Turbs, with the larger drilled pin for the 5th wheel hitch.

When we towed the tt, I made brackets and locked the torsion bars to the trailer tongue.
