My choice is right over the fire on the Camp Chef Mountain Man Over-The-Fire Grill and Griddle, made by Cabelas.

I have a Weber Q200 w/stand and hose adapter I picked up practically brand new on craigslist for $85. That's probably the best deal I ever got on CL. It stays in the camper's storage area with my camp kitchen.

Our next trip is the chili cookoff weekend. I'm so stoked about that. I'm also taking my masterbuilt electric smoker. I used a charcoal smoker for years and it's superior to electric, but with 3 kids and little time the set it and forget it (just add wood for a little while every hour) can't be beat for me. Food still tastes good.

We use a pit barrel cooker. It is an ugly drum style cooker. Use it as a smoker or a grill or both. I also sell them if anyone is interested. You can het them with logos for any branch of the military or police or fire on them. Send me a message if anyone is interested.

Cut...paste...

I like this one. Here's why.

It's small making it very portable but very roomy inside.

It's heavy duty; very thick metal so it holds a steady temp and will get as hot or cool as you need it. It won't break down in a year like the thin ones do.

You can easily set the temperature where you want it by adjusting the vents and/or adding more charcoal and/or wood.

It's good old fashioned charcoal (as opposed to gas or electric-not knocking pellet smokers).

It's very inexpensive (about $75; military discount too at Lowes!)

The grates are cast iron. Between that and the heavy duty metal it'll last a long time (you'll need to coat it obviously).

It cools down super fast. When you're done, take the coals out via the drawer and dump them in the camp fire. Grill will be cool shortly after and ready for storage (get yourself a nice set of heat gloves).

It's really easy to assemble.

It doubles as a grill. I make great apple wood smoked burgers on it though (buy the chunks not the small stuff you have to soak).

and also...it smokes super well. Add some chunks of apple wood on top of the charcoal and smoke away. I buy bags of apple wood from Amazon or Walmart. They last a long time (longer than you'd think). I think they cost about $8 a bag. I think I posted some photos of it on this forum somewhere but if not let me know and I can send a few.

Walmart sells a fantastic burner. I place my chimney on it, fill it with charcoal and in 10 minutes or less I have hot coals. You'll also need a good digital thermometer that measures both air temp and food temp.

I hope this helps some. Let me know what you think!

I carry a Humphrey's Battle box insulated cooker, 18" Weber Smokey Mountain and some times my "wood fired double kettle pizza cooker". I like to have options.

All this stuff is when I do BBQ comps. Typically I just carry my 22 inch Weber charcoal grill.

Love that Humphrey cooker. You need to make a cart for it like I did for my Backwoods Party.

Problem with the Humphrey is it's 300 lbs. lol I thought about a cart like yours, but for travelling and getting it in and out of the toy hauler and moved around on grass I needed big wheels too. The dolly I have it on works great.

For comps we do a 17lb or so brisket, two 9lb pork butts and 4 racks of saint louis ribs, all in that Humphrey. Lot of rack space, heavy as hell but it's all steel tube framed, should last a lifetime, even with us beating on it.

I use an Old Smokey grill and a Traeger PTG+ pellet grill. I love smoking 6-8 lb pork butt, chicken and brisket on the pellet grill.

We have a Traeger smoker, too. I love that thing! Only use it at home though. These are electric, so that might not be the thing to use if boondocking.

I bought a Kingsford smoker at Wal-Mart $35 it's ok but it never gets to 250 no matter what I do to it. Luckily camping I am in no rush so just keep the water bowl full.

As a matter of fact I entered a amateur grill off last weekend for our local park days and won first place in ribs and overall winner for ribs and pork loin.

All I can say is that @#$%^ Turbs, Cause of him I spent money on yet another grill. He knows I have a grill addiction, and because of this post, as well as all the PM's he diligently answered all my questions on, I bought this Davy Crockett.

If he had only been rude or ignored me, maybe I would still have some money in my pocket. It's all his fault for being so dang helpful.

Yeah he has that affect!
We bought the GMG Davey Crocket too and I am in love with it!! I bake desserts in it after hubby smokes or grills the dinner! Check out the Blackberry Crisp recipe on their website! I have made it several times!

No not useful if boondocking, but I don't boondock. If you have a generator you can use it. I also carry my charcoal grill too.
