Bed cover (roll-x)/ 5th wheel clearance

Just recently jumped in to the 5th wheel experience and I am looking for a bed cover now.

The one that I am leaning towards is the Bak roll-x

Amazon.com: BAK 36309 Roll-X Tonneau Cover: Automotive

This is a hard top that rolls up on top of the bed rails and is bigger than the soft top style in the rolled up position.

I have a shortbed F-250 and was wondering if the fifth wheel might come in contact with the roll-x when its rolled up to the back of the cab.

Does anyone have this setup?

Sneak (DH) uses the hard tri fold X-tang:
Extang Tonneau Covers - Shop RealTruck.com

Our TV is listed in my signature. He simply folds it up on to the last section against the back window and there are connectors there that hold it in place. (we have the extended cab (not crew cab) with 4 doors...short bed. IIRC it's 6'5"

No clearance problems with the Revolution pinbox and/or hitch.

Looking at the picture of it rolled up you should be OK. I had one similar to this kind, but it rolled up below the bed rails. I can't remember the brand name.

I have a Retrax Pro, so there is no additional height. Even if there were- being close to the truck cab, it shouldn't be a problem.

My issue is that the rails for the rolltop cover come in from the sides of the bed. My pin box has a plastic shroud the hung down lower than the pin box itself. On sharp turns (even going forward), it would make contact. It finally started cracking in a couple of places before I could get my father-in-law to cut it back.

I have the BakFlip G1 (looks like the new model may be the G2), and it works great. It has 4 sections, and I can fold it 3 and leave the 4th and still pull the 5th wheel just fine. The only issue, if you want to make it one, is to have full access to the bed, the "flips" (sections) all lay against the rear windshield when it's completely folded up. But that has not been an issue for me. This cover has been/done everything I want.

Loved my roll up cover on my old truck, never had a 5th behind that one but I see no issues.

I have a Pace Edwards jackrabbit roll up cover for my short bed f250 that takes up about 8-10 inches of bed space. Not an issue with the fifth wheel but the bit of space it takes up doesn't allow me to carry 2 bikes in the bed as I do without the tonneau cover. I hate it for other reasons . When it's wet and cold and freezes, the thing won't roll. In fact, I have it for sell.

Here's a picture of our set up with the Retrax Pro and Reese Elite. We never take the hitch out and it fits nicely under the cover. The Retrax isn't my favorite cover, but it works. Not exactly water tight at all.

my dad has the retrax both he and I like it but I was looking at the roll-x because it rolls on top of the bed not into a box installed in the bed.

My logic/ thought is that I can add a short (~40gallon) aux diesel tank and still be able to put a row or two of wood on top of the tank. with the retrax and other canister style covers I would have to put the wood near the tailgate...which is where I carry other lighter stuff.

If I had to do it over again, I definitely would NOT have the retrax. I don't like the box in the bed, the painted aluminum mine's made of isn't holding up to well to my use, and of course, it leaks water like all get out. If I weren't trying to lock stuff up, I'd probably just have a cheap vinyl cover or something.

My dads is not the "pro version" so it's made of fiberglass? lexan? or some sort of plastic. I don't think he has had a problem with leaks.

the roll-x is made of aluminum but the top is vinyl covered to make it water proof/resistant. and its cheaper than the retrax which is another reason I have been considering it.

While not a bed cover, I use a softopper, so I can fold it down when I have the 5er on but when I disconnect I have a full topper to keep things dry. It also comes all the way off in about 5 minuets.

They are made in Boulder CO.

I used to have a Leer 100XL cap that worked well with my previous TT. I had rigged up a block-and-tackle system to raise it up to the rafters in my garage when I wanted to use the full bed for bulk material but that got to be too much of a hassle and took too long when combined with all the other prep work.

So I sold the cap and put in a BakFlip FibreMax - basically a G2 but with fibreglass top surfaces. Supposedly the finish on the fibreglass is much more durable and snow and ice won't stick to it nearly as much as aluminum. The hinges are rubber and totally sealed so there should be no trouble operating in the winter here.

Here are some pics of normal life and set up to tow. Takes 30 seconds to switch between the two including swapping the tailgate. The TV didn't have a locking tailage so I installed a Bully lock. I also installed some LED strips under the rails with the front and back set switched independently tapped off the running light for the left taillight.

That's it Dave. Only I just put one bungee on the driver's side. It keeps the folds down just fine. Oh, and I don't have a pretty LED light strip under there like you do. Nice!
