The best place is in the back to the truck.

I carry (2) 5 gallon jugs in the back of my truck for both the generator and as emergency backup for my tow vehicle in case I have trouble finding a gas station I can fit in. You really don't want an accidental spill inside your RV.

I-80 has a good number of truck stops on it in Wyoming. I go that way to Utah often. Never had a problem finding gas.

I would definitely recommend the "Gas Buddy" app. It's never let me down when I needed to find a gas station. I just wish more people would post pics of the entrance and exits to the pumps rather than the front of the store.

487 does not have gas stations, you would need to gas up in Laramie or Medicine Bow. And then drive 487 to the casper highway where you could get gas in Alcova (backtracking) or gas up in Casper. It is a nice route just very remote

You need to get the GAS BUDDY app for your smart phone. It gives you gas and diesel prices anywhere you are or traveling to. I can search for closest gas/diesel station to where I am or look for the cheapest price. I've used the app for over 5 years. I never go blindly anywhere looking for gas. Once you find the station you want it will then allow you to get directions to that station.

The gallon of gas is just for the generator.
Wonder what kind of road it is. Planing on taking US 70 thru Colorado on the way back. Anyone been on that hwy? I'm pulling an evo 26' trailer prob weigh about 6000 lbs or so for the first time. Driving a 2014 Silverado gas 5.3 with a tow package.

The problem I have is not finding gas but finding stations that I can easily navigate through while towing a 36' travel trailer. I traveled to FL recently and just outside of Charlotte, NC I had to try 4 different highway exits before finding a station that was laid out properly. I don't have the luxury of being able to pick and choose based on price. I have to go with the station I fit in.

I hear ya! I picked up my new 29'er 3 days ago and, after bypassing a Flying J, stopped at a Walmart Neighborhood Market for gas on the way home. This was my first experience pulling a TT, and I about took out the pumps trying to get in there. I'm pretty sure this was when i ripped off my sewer pipes! First lesson for me: use truck stops if at all possible.

Some truck stops don't work either. Since my truck uses gas and not diesel, I have to pull in where the cars gas up and some of those pumps just aren't suitable.

For those wanting to easily find TRUCK stop gas/diesel stations along the way with their smart phones...here's some links to the major "brand name" truckstop apps:
Pilot Flying J
https://www.loves.com/en/loves-solut...-loves-connect
TruckSmart® Mobile App | Travel Centers of America
Note that you get a 3 cent discount with GoodSam membership at the Pilot/Flying J's...sometimes I over ride my skinflint genes with a stop at Ta-Petro to hit the Iron Skillet!
