Not sure how or why from Memphis you would end up going thru Atalanta on your way to Florida, but okay. If you do I-65 to 231, at Dothan, AL you can also take 84 east to 19 past Tallahassee to 19 south. Then depending on where in Florida you are going, stay on 19 or take I-10 east to I-75 south.

Mark, I meant to say earlier DW doesn't like to go old roads, she likes to stay on interstates as much as possible. Safer places to stop, Me , I do all the driving ,I like shorter routes,

We have 3 separate trips planned to Florida this winter from mid Michigan. We like to get as far south as quick as possible. Most of the time we do I-75 to just north of Knoxville on the first day which is a long day and about 550 miles. Then we usually take I-40 toward Asheville then I-26 to I-95 south and into Florida through Jacksonville. Between this route and all I-75 is about 45 miles or 45 minutes at 60 mph. 45 minutes over 3 days is 15 minutes extra per day and we think it is worth it.

Ok, so Atlanta is a disaster with the crazies cutting you off, traffic, Roads and Tourists heading somewhere. My advice is you pick a great rest stop well before Atlanta, have dinner and take a snooze until about 11pm and plan Atlanta trip for about 2AM in the morning running the HOV or Right hand lanes. The only traffic will be truckers and professional drivers. This way you also miss the Macon/Valdosta Traffic and you can hit the Florida line Rest Stop for Breakfast. I run this 7 or 8 times a year and it reduces the STEERING WHEEL GRIP by 50%. Good luck

You guys are funny.. some of us travel that route daily.
Keep your calm and just drive it. Give yourself plenty of room and you'll be fine. If you want to get through town quickly avoid the rush hours (7am -10am and 3pm to 7pm). If you're there during the rush hours its not impossible.. it's just going to take you longer to get through.
Whatever lane you're in, STAY IN IT! Switching lanes will get you in more trouble than it's worth.

when you travel a route daily you know the exact route and required lane changes... when you do it once or twice a year it is close to terrifying, and NOBODY wants to get behind an RV... changing lanes is next to impossible

I make it easy.. just stay toward the middle lanes. It's not uncommon to have two lanes on the right that turn into an exit. On the left that's typically the HOA lane. I'd stay out of that.

but others say to use the HOV lane...
Easier to bypass Atlanta... there are so many ways to avoid it altogether...
I have not yet been bitten in Atlanta, but I expect many others have been.

I have relatives in Florida and have been going regularly since the mid 60's. If Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Louisville or Nashville is near me, I stay on I-65 to Montgomery, Alabama and then 231 from Montgomery through Dothan to I-10. If going down the west coast of Florida, I go down 19/27.
I avoid I-75 as much as possible.

Avoiding Atlanta
Head south towards Memphis, than on towards south Mississippi , take a left on I-10 to I-75 south.

Here is the rules.. I don't see anything that would indicate that it's not allowed. https://dps.georgia.gov/high-occupancy-vehicle-lanes
I would say to stay out of them as it just increases the stress level for me at least.. folks in that lane are always in a hurry and sometimes the exits can throw you off if you're not watching the signage properly.

Not sure where you are headed in Florida but Rt 10 runs through the panhandle which suffered a recent hurricane. Mostly recovered somewhat but lots of FEMA trailers and some shortages of things.

Wow, this thread is still active. OP posted on the 11th he was leaving the next day But if anybody else is on the road heading down to Florida or across the panhandle, I just went thru the hurricane zone last week and most places are open. One rest area is closed due to heavy damage and the other around mm 150 is now open. Some lane closures due to tree removal.
