Angry Blow out and the fix

I recently had a blow out (peeled a cap) on my toy hauler. It ripped my fuel station door off and bent up my skirting. I came up with a temp. fix.

The fix.

I am a sheet metal worker by trade and we are looking at up grading 5ER's we have had a couple blowout on our present camper. I have been thinking that the first thing I will do will pull the tires off and build a metal fender well out of either stainless steel or aluminum so when I do have another blowout it will not tear up anything

Any thoughts from anyone else?

When I had the blowout, the major damage was to the alum curved sheet, not to the fender well itself. The tread flies loose but still connected to the carcass and beats the devil out of the rolled alum trim.

I don't know why manufactures don't beef up these areas. Hope someone from FR reads this and decides to change this area of the campers I think they would get a lot of good reviews from it

Do I understand you're using "recapped" tires? That would scare the heck out of me!

It will do the same to a car or a truck. Couldn't beef it up enough to prevent damage and if they did, it would have to be 1/4" steel plate. Easiest thing to do is get GOOD tires and a TPMS.

These are the original tires that came with the T/H, 2 1/2 years old. (Not Recaps). My opinion, most trailer manufactures install cheap tires.

My first 5ther I had less that two years. I had a blow out, with-in two months later all my other original tires all were egg shaped (Busted Belts). Tire manufacture...Carlisle.
This had happened in 2005. They might make a better tire now. But I stay away.

as usual with tire posts no info on weight, speeds, temp, psi, how tires were maintained.....so far no blowouts here, but try and keep weight at 80% of max and speed...never over 60 mph///mostly 56-58 mph range....and always use TPMS and keep pressure at max all the time including when parked....plus the tires roll regular...
longest layup a couple of months when wintering in Fla....even though no on road keep pressure at max ... good luck, I can only imagine that a blow is no fun...

You think that`s bad wait till you see one that breaks off the plumbing connections. not mine but a neighbor in a campground.

On my old trailer the Duras it came with were rotting through the belt at the two year mark. Replaced them with Goodyear Marathons and got a set of tire covers. Whenever it's parked in storage, the covers on the tires. Doing the same with the tires on the new camper. However, I'm sure I'll discover cracks again within a few years.

Trailer was 4 months old, factory tires at 53/55# due to having traveled approx. 200 miles, traveling 55mph, ambient temperature 90°, approx. 20 miles north of Springfield, MO traveling south on US 65. No tpms. No water in any tank. Tire Pressure was verified at gas stop approx. 15 miles previous. Tires were also balanced.

Tires were a little less than 2 1/2 yrs old, I was well under weight, I was between 60 and 65 mph, temp approx 90, I always keep my tires at max or with-in a couple pounds under max (all even). My 5ther is parked in a 34' X 36' enclosed building (no sun exposure).

I am not one to just hook up and go. I keep my trailer very well maintained.

My previous 5ther I had same problem with the original tires with-in two years. I had LT (light truck) tires installed on it and lasted 8 yrs.
