Hi... sorry to ask a stupid question, but I really would like to verify whether or not a passport is required for land travel to Canada from the US and return. I read that it is required, but I've heard so many folks say they didn't need their passports that I had to ask.

An american citzen requires a passport or passport card for entry into Canada.

Yes. You will need a passport for everyone in your vehicle.

Also if you are planning to take your unit into Canada and back to the USA, make sure you have ALL your paper work, and it is correct and in order. You will also be subject to inspection of all vehicle's, we have been inspected and not, (I guess it depends on the "mood the world is in that day"). It is not any problem, but it may take some extra time, just do as they say, give all papers, asked for, say yes or no sir/ma'am, and everything goes smooth. We have been in and out of Canada, many times, and actually have had more problems coming back in the USA, than going into Canada (go figure). The US side goes over every piece of paper you have with a fine tooth comb, and I guess that is extra good, considering the climate of the world today.

things have changed sense 911. we went over several years ago and did not have a passport. we were told we would have more problems getting back if there was a security problem in the US without one. i've been told u have to have one now.
we did encounter more problems returning than going.
if u have the time, i'd say go ahead and get one.

yes.
we took a cruise the year the passport requirement went into effect. we got ours and didn't have any problem. they did relax that rule if u could show u had applied (because the passport office could not turn out the volume they were swamped with).
if u go on a cruise now, they require it. for everyone.

In the US it is my understanding that the enhanced drivers license is only available in border states such as NY, MI, MN, ND, VT, etc.

If you take a dog make sure you have its papers and al shots up to date! They let us in without it but honestly thought one of us was staying behind with the dog until the other got back with papers.
