The reason is so that you don't sag out the springs on one side of the trailer.
I would never use slide out supports, even if set up permanent on blocks. The reason is when the trailer settles the lighter weight of the slides will not settle the same amount and will put the slide out in a bind that may damage or break it. Slide outs are designed to be self supporting, so adding supports can be damaging. Imagine if a tire went flat with a slide out support in use. Even stabilizing jacks will still let it drop.
Bottom line, Don't Use Them!!! If they were required the manuf would supply them.
