Brake-Away Switch

OK - I DID IT! I pulled out from under my 5th wheel without unhooking my brake-away switch. It ripped the brake-away switch completely off the hitch, leaving a couple of wires hanging there. I would have expected the break-away wire to have been ripped from the switch but that was not the case. Anyway, I am installing a new break-away switch onto the hitch. My question is, are the trailer brakes on when the switch is open or closed? In other words, right now the wires are separated - so the switch would be open - are the trailer brakes on or off.

Trailer brakes are on when switch is closed, so now with wires separated the trailer brakes are off........

The break away switch should be wired so that it is a normally open circuit ... the pin is pulled, the circuit closes, allowing voltage to travel to the trailer brakes.
