Camping at DC

Doesn't anybody camp when visiting the capital? I'm on night two in this beautiful Cedarville State Forest 20 miles south of the capital and again I'm the only one here. There's a camp host parked but it has been empty since I got here early Sunday morning. I don't know who is taking care of the place but the showers and ground are spotless. Seems very strange to be all alone in such a busy area.

I just came back and stood at Greenbelt National park. I am working on a review for my blog.

If you want hookups, then there is Cherry Hill in College Park. Too pricey for me as I was on a solo trip to visit friends. My friends enjoyed the NP wooded setting.

The other option is to go west to northern Virginia and drive to a metro stop to take the train into the city.

There's also a KOA north and east of the city a bit that people use.

I am staying at the KOA in Millersville Md. I chose this for the shuttle service to Washington DC for sight seeing with wife and 2 daughters 9 & 6. It is a bit pricey, $70 per night, but not being from the area I went with a known brand.

Not at all unhappy with this place just surprised that I'm the only one. Feels a bit strange for this time of year. Out here in the woods it is...dark! The only thing I hear is my A/C and the planes above.

That is how it was at Greenbelt. Maybe 10 sites in my loop were used?

Definitely like the $30/night State and Forest campgrounds. And this is only about a 40 min. drive to the capital. $22 to park at Union Station parking deck all day.

I've stayed at Cherry Hill twice. Yeah, it was a bit pricey, but you can drive down the Beltway one exit and park at the Metro stop and take the Metro into DC. If you wait until after 9:30am, you can get a pass that lets you ride anywhere it goes, all day, up to midnight, for one low price. ($5 about 10 years ago, I think). If you've got a Class C or A, they'll take you to the Metro, but I'm not sure exactly how you get back.

If I understand correctly, there's a metro BUS stop right outside of the campground.

I live just north of there if anyone ever wants a visitor.

Traveling with dogs so I had to pick one close. Picked the south side since that is the direction I'm heading from here.

I'm heading to Cherry Hill right now...well, not this second but en route. We're in Columbus, OH right now. Will be pulling in on Wednesday. There's a bus stop right outside the office which will drop you off downtown via the Metro. Oh and they have a dog walking service to boot! :-)

Greenbelt was $16 a night. It was a bit old but for that price, I was happy.

Dog walking service would be good, but I'm not sure if I would trust just anyone with my Brittany. Hunting dog and always on the hunt. If she gets loose she's gone in a flash.
