Funny reading these and seeing there's actually other humans out there

1) Very first trip we arrived after dark and begin setting up the camper. Everything goes well to start...Unhooked from truck, electric and water pluged in so I decide to get wood and start our first official campfire. Got a good flame going, time to get out the fold out chairs. They were new too and still had the tags on, so I grabbed my new Mora Light My Fire Swedish knife (razor blade sharp mind you) and proceed to slice my thumb pulling it out of the sheath.

Head back in the camper to check the damage in the light which luckily didn't require stitches, but to add insult to injury notice the camper wasn't level. I had put in a low area on one side.

2) Couple of trips afterwards learned my lesson for not fumbling around in the dark. Everything was going according to plan, but needing something out of the truck halfway there I remember I left the keys for it in the camper and swung around and smacked the awning.

We aren't talking a slight bump either, more like a knee buckling, gong sounding, star seeing one. After shaking it off and regaining my vision the first person that comes into focus is my daughter looking out the dining room window overcome with laughter

Other than a bruised ego I was left with a nice cut on the bridge of my nose that weekend.

From both trips I learned to slow down a smell the roses. There will always be more camping trips.

When I first got my RV; I heard I should level it to keep the fridge working properly. So, I leveled it front to back. I quickly realized the RV ALSO needs to be level left and right. I found out the hard way(literally) when I opened an upper cabinet and a heavy stack of plates slid out and hit me on my head, giving me a nice bruise.

I love these camping mishap stories. Such great stories.

Our funniest one was 12 years ago when we purchased our 1994 StarCraft Starflyer Pop Up from our neighbor and took it on our maiden voyage. Dry camping, of course.

Long story short, we had friends visit us at the CG, and of course upon nightfall, being pitch black and only using our Coleman lanterns, and with bugs galore, the 4 of us decided to go inside and sit around the dinette and visit under the dim lit battery powered table lamp, so as not to attract MORE bugs.

Lo and behold when my friend ( who is a bigger guy ) went to sit next to his GF, on the rear side of the dinette, the front reared up like a wild horse, and back down it came. BAM! Scared the crap out of all of us. The look on our faces were priceless. But we laughed it off, and went out to see what had happened. No damage was done, but the look on my friends face was too funny. He would not go back in the Pup.

After we were finished with our 2 day camping adventure, and got home, we took a look underneath, only to realize there were stab jacks on the rear of the Pup. Funny thing, even the neighbor didn't know they were there. We knew there were 2 on the front. Ahhh, the joys of camping and learning. Making great "LOL" memories.

To this day we still reminisce about this funny mishap.

First time camping went to Windstar Casino about 65 miles away as a shake down trip, figuring if I forgot anything a Walmart was nearby. Now remember I was solo on this trip, and things were going well. Near bedtime I decided to take a shower and proceeded to get wet and washing my hair. When I went to turn the water back on all I got was a very slight drizzle.

Tried taking the shower head apart thinking it must have debris clogging it but it was too tight. All the tools are in the truck. Dum dee dum dum, on with my robe open the truck grab the tool box, back in the trailer. Take apart the shower head and remove the restrictor, back in the shower to rinse the cold shampoo off my head alls well. Turn the water off and get soaped up and when I turn on the water no flow.

Now anyone used to camping will realize this dummy doesn’t know the shower head has it’s own shutoff, and it took my a while shivering in the cold to figure it out. Long story short next day I removed the original shower head with the disc shutoff that closes when it wants, and installed an Oxygenics with shutoff.

I have a pretty good one.

First year out with our pop up it was the last outing of the year so I complete all the steps to close the camper and remember I want to give the canvas a good wipe down.
So I jump on the front bunk and wipe the canvas down and all is good.
Now I jump on the back bed and after about 15 sec a did a killer wheelie, I went flying off and the camper came slamming down. No damaged to me or the camper and my and the wife had a real good laugh.

I have a couple of stories to share. When I was a kid we used to tent camp and then my dad bought a used 1971 Holiday Rambler. So since we now had a camper my brother and I talked our parents into letting us take our dog with us. We go to bed the first night, my brother and I slept in the bunk bed above the couch/ bed our parents slept in with the dog sleeping underneath them. I wake up the next morning and hear my dad say " what is that?" I look over the edge of the bed just in time to see him stick 2 fingers into a pile of dog poop and smell it to figure out what he had stepped in getting out of bed. LOL. That was the dogs first and only camping trip. LOL

Last Memorial day we stayed in a state campground in Brookville Indiana. We get there around noon and get set up and we were hanging out having a couple of cold ones when our neighbors behind us arrive.
One guy has a brand new fifth wheel and his buddy has an older beat up fifth wheel. The guy with the new one decides he can't back his in so he decides to pull in .
He proceeds to pull in and breaks his a/c cover on a low tree limb, so they drink a few beers and decide his buddy will get on top of the trailer and guide him forward cutting off tree limbs as they go ! LOL
An hour and several beers and 8 tree limbs later they finally have his 5er in place, time for his buddy to get his out of the road and into his lot.
I'm guessing this was his first time having to back a trailer as it took him 45 minutes and 3 beers to finally get into his spot.
He gets ready to lower the jacks and pulls out 2 sets of jumper cables and hooks them together, then hooks one end to the truck and the other to the trailer to power the jacks.
I had to laugh at that because he has a pretty new Dodge /Cummins that is lifted and has 3,000.00 worth of tires and wheels on it and the trailer has no battery . LOL
He gets it unhooked pulls the truck out and puts his support stand under his kingpin, pulls out hooks the jumper cables back and raises his jacks up putting ALOT of pressure on his support stand.
His wife then decided he needed to move back more, he pulls up gets lined up in front of the trailer throws it in reverse and backs up knocking the stand out and dropping the nose of the trailer onto the truck destroying both bed sides on the truck !!

Have a couple of similar ones...

1. In 1995 while still tent camping we set up in Ft Mountain, GA. a heavily wooded campground. Our main vehicle was a '94 Dodge conversion van. During the night it began to rain and the wind picked up. The DW and boys were uneasy so we all piled into the van. Later into the night the van began to shake so violently it woke all of us up. Looking outside we could see it was severely gusting. My 8 yr old son Alex, attempting to be brave said, "It's ok mommy, we're safe in here.". At that moment between flashes of lightning we observed our tent along with ground spikes and (secured) tarp over the top, whisk off the ground into the flashing night sky. My younger son, (5) just before he dove under the covers said to his older brother, "Why did you say that?" The next morning we found our tent approx 1/4 mile away in a creek, surprisingly with no holes. We never found the tarp.

2. In 2002 just after setting up out Coleman popup at Darien Lakes State Park, NY it began to rain and boy did it rain, it seemed like it rained all night. The next morning my DW got up to go to the park facilities, opened the door and told me that she needed help to get to the bathroom. During the night the creek had overflowed and flooded the whole campground. Even though the bottom of the camper was dry the water had crested the camper step. I had to put on my waders and carry her and both my young sons, one at a time, piggyback to the bathroom and back again. Luckily the water began to recede in just a few hours and all was fine.

Our last trip of last season. Trip was fantastic. Packing everything up and getting the TT ready to hook up. So we decided to put the cats in the truck and leave the A/C running since it was hot. Wouldn't you know it one of the cats stepped on the door lock button. As soon as I heard that lock thump my heart sank. Wife did not have the spare key with her either. Luckily I left both driver and passenger windows cracked about an inch. After a good long search I found a stick on appropriate length and curve to hit the unlock button. Sorry, cats, in the crates you go this time.

my 3 biggest blunders involve the slide-out.

#1, I found it totally possible for a complete Rubbermaid kitchen trashcan to be ejected out the slide gap while running the slide out, leading to a huge argument over who forgot to put the trashcan in the camper before we left. (Took a couple hours to finally figure out what happened)

#2, I learned that you gotta make sure the bathroom door is fully closed before running the slide in, or else the slide will hit it and carefully remove it from its frame while bending the crap out of the hinges.

#3, There is a respectable amount of force generated by the slide out mechanism. More than enough to crush my Can Cooker into a credible Mobius loop.

the funny thing is, I'm generally pretty good about checking for stuff like this before running the slide. However, I can guarantee that if I forget, something will get damaged.

Agreed. Our furry family members can be a real hazard sometimes. One of my dogs once locked me out of the coach door. Thank God there was an unlocked door to the cab.

A few years ago me my DH and another couple went camping at a state park, we both had 5th wheels at the time. The campout went great, come Sunday we load up and head home, we were in the lead, when our friends call us to tell us they had a blow out. We take the next exit turn around to go back to help them out. They (the guys) are having a hard time finding a lug wrench to fit, so while they are looking to the right tool, me and my friend get out camp chair to sit on while we are waiting for the guys to get the tire changed out. We had been out there for maybe 20 - 30 minutes when two cop cars show up, they told us that they had quite a few phone calls telling them that there were two rigs camping out on the side of the road. All four of us looked at the cops and said "Really of all the places we could camp, on the side of the interstate in the not so good part of Birmingham, AL is not it"

#2 I thought I was alone on that one. Mine was the bunkhouse door and it mangled the door knob. I feel better now....lol

Did this last weekend. I backed into our spot, but got too close to the pedestal for the slide to open. In a hurray, frustrated, I didn't pull the electric tongue jack all the way up. Well, without the WDH connected and a big curb, I hit.

Oh, that sucks in so many ways. Carry a slide stick, then you can check clearances before you unhook next time.
