Camping in Gulf Shores Alabama
Hi, we are new to the forum and are traveling for our sons funeral in Wisconsin.
We will be traveling to Gulf Shores Alabama in a couple weeks, when we are on our way home to Arizona, does anyone have a recommendation for staying in or near Gulf Shores or someplace on the coast? We will be heading to Texas then home to AZ. we have never been to this area but need time to recoup from all the sadness.
Thank You

I'm very sorry for your loss.
Gulf State Park is a pretty good place to stay if you have the RV with you.

Sorry - to learn of the loss of your son.
I live in Wisconsin, about an hour south of Lambeau Field (in Green Bay). I don't know what dates you will be coming or leaving the state but this is just a couple of things to consider if you are pulling or driving in this part of the state. There is a lot of construction on Highway 41 or I41. Please be aware of when the Packers game times are because the traffic gets bottled up. And if it is the "Gold" package tickets for mostly the Milwaukee residents the traffic is heavy all the way down to Milwaukee. And tomorrow we are supposed to have 40mph wind gusts - not save for taller vehicles. Travel save! And again, sorry for your loss.

Our favorite for camping on the gulf coast is ft Pickens Pensacola. Loop A is best and reservations would be wise

If you are not into fancy Southport is very reasonable. On the right before crossing the causeway Bridge. LuLu's is on the left.

Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores is a good place to stay, but be sure you check availability and make reservations before you go. They do fill up quite often. On our last trip to Gulf Shores in October, the state park was full but we found a nice place to stay at the Anchors Aweigh RV Resort in Foley, AL at a reasonable price. This park is less than 10 miles north of Gulf Shores just off highway 59.
Sorry for you loss.

Another vote for Gulf Shores State Park. It is close to everything; beaches, shopping, dining but if you want to retreat - get away from all that and just rest and relax I recommend Dauphin Island campground - it's on the other side of Mobile Bay but you can catch the ferry to Gulf Shores area. I've stayed at both and they are both nice campgrounds .
Sorry for the loss of your son.

Stayed there last February and agree whole completely. If you have a large rig, you will need to find a sight that's large enough and watch overhead limbs. Lots of history and sights to see in Pensacola. We also like the state park in Gulf Shores. Sorry about your loss!

1st, sorry for your loss.
2ndly, you better decide real soon and make a reservation because the snowbirds are flying in real soon and you won't be able to find a spot anywhere.
And don't expect this to be off season(prices). This is the 2nd season for all the businesses down there.

Gulf State Park is our recommendation. We have also stayed at Island Retreat, which was okay and traveled about and looked at the other parks. I was not impressed. For the site size, the sp is great.

Sorry to hear about your sons passing.......My wife and I stayed at Gulf Shores RV Resort this past spring and really liked it. It's about a 4 mile drive to the beach and is right off of hwy 59.

So very sorry for your loss. Hope your traveling is easy and relaxing. Another vote for Ft. Pickens if you can get a site in Loop A. Use your senior access pass and the sites are half price. Beach is an easy walk, very uncrowded and a quiet restful place. Be aware there are no restaurants or other commercial establishments close by. Just peace and quiet.

We've stayed twice at Coastal Haven-near Fairhope. About a 40 min drive to the busy Gulf Shores. I understand they fill up in winter.
Gulf Breeze Resort is a couple miles from Gulf Shores.
We tend to try to stay in the outlying areas and drive into the busy areas to shop or eat.

The State Park is nice, but Sugar Sands is exceptional. You can take the Foley Express off I-10 all the way without going through the small towns. It is our go to park when we are down.

Is this a yearly event with Thanks Giving? We use to go to Charleston SC but the camp ground there stopped having the Thanks Giving meal. Later RJD
