I will camp on holidays if I have the time off work, but I will be selective about the destination. As for commercial campgrounds I usually only stay at those overnight while traveling to a further destination (except for one in San Diego we go to every couple of years). Otherwise, the state parks, national parks and other popular destinations are too busy for us on a holiday weekend, we usually try to find a place to boondock in our own region.

Similar to Stevea1956, our family tries to get together every year, they all like to rent a cabin somewhere and all bunk up in there... I hate that.... so we always take our trailer and stay somewhere near. We have our trailer to keep our sanity. They are all very religious and we like beer and other beverages, so we escape the madness and find our own little corner of reality for some peaceful getaway.

I think holidays are busy no matter where you go.
Unfortunately, for people with limited time off of work, holidays are usually the only chances they/we have to get-away.
Is being in a busy airport/campground/highway better than being at work?
Guess that depends on how much you enjoy your job. ;p

Major holidays almost always guarantee a day off from work, meaning a longer weekend. I would rather camp in a "less than ideal" environment, than work anytime...

Holiday, No Holiday when ever we can. Being as we are still working we can only go on weekends, holidays and when we take vacation days. Also being in New York it kind of cuts your season short. We can usually get if lucky some in March and go until December 1.

We go to various CG in the area anytime. But always meet Memorial weekend with family from out if state. We actually make plans and reserve sites on Christmas Day. Great kick off to the summer!

I have to say that me and my brother love to get to the CG a few days early on a holiday weekend and watch people pulling in and setting up. Sometimes it is a real hoot, other times we offer to help if we see it is warranted. Either way it is all good!

We camp on holidays as it gives us that extra day. We have TTN so the crowds are no different than any other weekend and do not have the drunks that others have experienced.

We camp on holidays but are selective as to where we go as some others are. In fact, my wife and I met while our families were camping at the same campground on the 4th of July weekend many years ago (my parents had a seasonal site and DW's aunt and uncle had a seasonal site). We still go to that same campground every year for the 4th holiday.

We camp almost all the summer holidays. We have a special place we camp for Memorial Day and Labor day. It's at a church camp where I went as a Kid. They only allow campers on those two dates for "Family Camp". We look forward to it every year.

We go through the calendar at the beginning of the year, and reserve camping at all of the holidays ahead of time, so we know we have a good spot. Around here, if you wait too long, there will not be a site available, and you end up not going anywhere!!!

I think many of us that will venture out & camp on holidays have found a way to make it work.

Some people have limited scheduling availability and will in up in the holiday traffic mess with little choice.
Either way, my trailer does not get holidays off.
The extended weekends helps make up for the extra holiday trouble I may incur.

With all of the above said - camping on holidays is not for everyone. But it is for me and out I will go.

If you've been at this long enough you learn where to go and where to avoid.

We try to avoid camping during holidays, but that being said, we're camping this weekend - our shakedown for our new Rockwood. It's only 10 miles from our house. I can't handle what I call the "amateurs"...mom and dad, their 7 screaming kids, 10 friends, 4 cases of beer, 2 big-as* barking dogs - you know the type. They've never camped before and don't possess the proper equipment or plan for rain, etc. Their kids run wild while they sit on their butts getting blind drunk. Sure hope those families stay home this weekend, or I'll be spending a lot of time inside my camper! LOL

We usually avoid the holidays but made the mistake of visiting one of our favorite state parks on the 4th of July. Crowded, noisy, and they blew up the bathroom. Will not make that mistake again. However, we once visited a small campground in the National Forest on the 4th and it was very pleasurable. I guess it depends on the place. Still, I avoid making reservations on the holidays...

I don't think we've camped on a holiday weekend - work usually gets in the way as I am a photographer and long weekends are popular for weddings and my wife works managing a 24/7 facility and holidays see the most call offs and other issues.

So this weekend will be our first holiday weekend, first time with our new trailer (to tow or camp in it) and the third time at our campground (bought into a resort last year).

Now we've been to various campgrounds, some busy (one we do a family meetup at in august is that way) and had a vaca at a state park on lake erie where we spent a week and saw maybe 8 other campers the entire week. Overall I prefer quite and empty over crowded and loud but we'll see if that changes any now that we're in a hard TT over a tiny popup - we now have privacy.

This weekend is liekly to have off and on rain so that scare some off -the advantage of a resort is you don't pay per night or make reservations and TT don't stay on one site all year so if the weather is iffy turnout will be low (and they don't lose their deposits and such) and if that happens the CG will have open space from empty spots.

If we can go as often as we'd like, being a resort with memberships, we should run into the same folks more often, unlike the transient crowd you get at SPs, and with a locked gate and no 'strangers' in the place you have a bigger sense of community than in public CGs, but that's probably less so on holiday weekends.

I know we're not camping july 4 and so far haven't made plans for labor day. There's an airshow in cleveland my son wants to go to so maybe we'll try and go camping up that way and be one of the unwashed drunken masses

I like walking through the campground with my dogs and seeing what and how others are camping in. I've seen a couple of times a tent- 4th of July wknd with a small table outside of their unzipped window with a window AC unit there blowing the tent and was a real enterprizing idea! Funny, but it works for them!! Randy

I would camp whenever the desire arise, if its a holiday, so be it. I am getting a sense that those who shun the holiday weekend, somehow feel as though they have a right of "entitlement" to campgrounds and holiday weekend campers are a different breed. The truth is that we are all unique and we each take different enjoyment out of our camping experience. Some like to sit by the campfire in quiet solitude, others like the company of friends, a few beers and some stories. Others like the freedom it gives to children to run and play. I would suggest that if you don't like people, and all their different forms of enjoyment, then stay home, do what you do best, watch the Fox news and complain.

Camping on a holiday is okay for us. Clinton SP in KS has a pretty good crowd most of the time.
